Yosuga no Sora: Remastered Edition

Hello, everyone!

This is Nani speaking. We, the fellow Yosuga no Sora fans, love the story and atmosphere this impactful visual novel creates. It first saw the release on December 5, 2008. Almost 18 years have passed since. Today, me and the TRJR team together bring life to a passion project of preservation!

Built entirely from scratch on Godot Engine, this project maintains a 1:1 look and feel of the original physical release.

There are additional benefits:

  • Easier to install from physical DVD, doesn’t require locale changes.
  • Natively supports Windows, Linux and Android.
  • Runs independently of framerate and resolution. Smoother animations, freely resizable window, borderless fullscreen.
  • Irons out bugs that were simply too difficult to fix due to the limitations of the old engine. Some of the visual bugs are jarring once you notice them.
  • Configurability and modding capabilities.

Let me demonstrate.

High resolution textures mod

Day/Night cycle (included)

The character is being shaded and tinted by the darkness of night. Backported from digital edition and is enabled by default.

Both of these features were added as an afterthought, meaning that they weren’t necessarily planned for. Modern engines are powerful and expressive tools. They don’t get in the way of your creativity.

Disclaimer: The remaster is based on physical edition of the game, not digital! You have to own the official DVD or a legal physical copy to install! If you have .xp3 files in your game folder, you have the digital version!

Join the TRJR Discord if you aren’t there yet.

  1. Extract the contents of the archive to a fresh empty folder. For example, 7-Zip lets you do it with right-click on the file → 7-ZipExtract to “rin-windows\”. This is the installer’s working directory, so you should install your game somewhere else.
  2. Open the installer’s directory, launch rin.exe, and follow the step-by-step instructions. You may insert the DVD beforehand.
  3. After installation is complete, you will have a new ヨスガノソラRE directory inside the games folder you chose as the destination during the installation process.
  4. You can now play the original game, or install mods and patches.
  1. Join the TRJR Discord if you aren’t there yet.
  2. Download Rin for Linux in the :open_file_folder:patches channel. The file should be named rin-linux.tar.gz.
  3. Extract the contents of the archive to a fresh empty folder. This is the installer’s working directory, and you should install your game somewhere else.
  4. Open the installer’s directory and follow the step-by-step instructions.
  5. In Linux’s case, Rin depends on the presence of an xdg-desktop-portal backend, and either libdbus or zenity to display the directory picker dialog.
  6. On Linux, run the installer through an already open terminal session, or launch it in a terminal from the context menu if you have this option.
  7. After the installation is complete, you will have a new ヨスガノソラRE directory inside the games folder you chose as a destination during the installation process. You can now play the original game, or install mods and patches.
  1. Install on the Desktop platform first (follow instructions for Windows/Linux)
  2. This is the necessary first step to legally obtain the game assets.
  3. You may also want to install mods and patches.
  4. Copy the game folder (ヨスガノソラRE) to your Android device via USB transfer.
  5. Download and install the .apk file from Discord.
  6. Launch the app. Navigate to the game folder and allow the app to access it.
  7. The startup time can be a little slow for now. Stay patient.
  8. Tap with a second finger or press the back button to simulate the right mouse button.

Grab from the link in #patches on the discord server and just put them into the game folder (ヨスガノソラRE). Don’t unzip anything.

Patches currently are:

  • patch.zip – Translates the game to English
  • decensor.zip – Decensors the game
  • highres.zip – Upscales the game to a higher resolution (and decensors the game)

No, there is no separation between full and base patches, like it is for physical and digital.

If you care, you can modify values in start.cfg and relaunch the game. Most people don’t. The default setting is to get translations for both in-game text and images.

Yosuga no Sora Decensor Patch

Hello, everyone!

We’re pleased to announce after years of promise that we now have a full decensor patch for Yosuga no Sora!

A HUGE thanks to SadMan for his efforts on this, drawing everything by hand over the last several months. Please consider supporting him on Patreon. He’s considering working on HnS in the future but needs your support!

As for translation, our one active VN translator has made good progress on TLC’ing the notorious Akira route, which now stands at 37%. Thank you very much, Sam!

Special thanks to Vixen and Enormous Spud for generating the patch.

rd316 and Nani have been working hard to rewrite our patching tools, thank you! (and thanks to Nani for help with debugging the patch!)

We are constantly looking for new translators, if you think you can help or know someone who can then please DM me.

Note: The game has been updated to a newer engine. Extract the entire patch from #📁patches and if it says something about smart screen, click “more info” then “run anyway”. Win 11 users are encouraged to download the hotfix. The skip to next chapter feature is temporarily disabled in the new engine, see readme.txt for more info.

MAJOR UPDATE – Significant improvements to the patch

Hello everyone!

We have just about managed to pull off another major update right before the end of the year.

In summary, improvements for all versions include:

  • Significant edits to the script with over 2000 lines changed to address grammatical, spelling, and line wrapping issues.
  • Fixing a few lines that appeared untranslated.
  • Removing stray spaces at the start of new lines.
  • Incremental updates to the TLC of Akira’s route.

And improvements for the physical versions include:

  • Bypassing the need for a Japanese locale emulator to run the games.
  • Enabling Sora’s route from the get-go.
  • Making the patch work without needing to overwrite any original file.

A huge thank-you to rd316 for his contributions to the patching tools.

What follows applies FOR PHYSICAL EDITIONS ONLY!

Our patching method for the physical edition of both games evolves thanks to our new engineer, allowing us to both translate previously-missing content as well as make patches much more manageable in terms of size, flexibility, and reversibility. To ensure the smoothest transition for everyone involved, please read instructions carefully.

First, we strongly advise that you perform a clean install. It should work on previously-patched installs, but it may lead to unexpected results and partly defeat the purpose of the new patching method. Please make sure to back up your saves beforehand, as there has been reported cases of overwritten saves. To do so, head over to C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming and copy the folder called Sphere to another location. Once the clean install is done, move that folder back where it belongs and overwrite everything.

To install the new patch for either game, head over to our Discord server, grab the right archive for your situation, then unzip the content of said archive to your install folder as you normally would.

  • You do not need supplementary files anymore to correct known issues or install the full version of our patch. Everything you need is contained in the new archives.
  • If you wish to go from the base patch to the full patch (or the other way around), simply grab the corresponding archive and replace the “patched” folder in your install

To play the game, run the executable which has “_en” appended to its name. (Note that a locale emulator is no longer mandatory, but you need to rename the folder of the game using only latin characters, e.g. Yosuga no Sora instead of ヨスガノソラ.)

In the event that the executable gets flagged by SmartScreen because it is unsigned, you should be able to click More info, then Run anyway. If not, follow these instructions through Windows Security on Windows 11:

  • Press Win + I to open Settings.
  • Navigate to Privacy & security, then Windows Security.
  • Select App & browser control.
  • Under Reputation-based protection, click Reputation-based protection settings.
  • Scroll down to the Check apps and files section.
  • Change the setting from Block to Warn.

Note: If you wish to play the game in Japanese, you can still do so by running the vanilla executable, but you must use a locale emulator or run it on an actual Japanese locale.

For those who are extra cautious, here are the hashes for our executables:

  • SHA256 hash of yosuga_en.exe: 4068ce3e87267961400956496f513326c580a688fb8d15912fbaa83d4a88710c
  • SHA256 hash of haruka_en.exe: ca5fa88e1e499b0e4087dc6a8ab2d9a79eca1b4b2943604fb28aa99fd72ac991

Please note that we could only run tests on so many configurations on our end before rolling out this considerable update. If you believe you encountered a glitch or crash despite following everything we laid out above, do reach out to us.

In other news, if you have not heard yet, Yosuga no Sora and Haruka na Sora are both coming to Steam in January, though they are only going to be released in simplified and traditional Chinese, with some content allegedly removed. We do not yet know all the details or whether our patches will be compatible with those versions, but we will update you once we know more.

Lastly, we published a new doujin translation in October, so head over to our Misc page for links if that’s your cup of tea!

That’s it! Enjoy the game.

From all the team at TRJR, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Special thanks to Kannarin for the translation, Vixen for finding the game, and CaptainClaw for creating the patch.

The game is extremely short and features a scene between Haru and Sora.

A bunch of exciting news!

Hello everyone!

It’s been a few months since our last post on the blog, and we’ve got some exciting updates to share with you!

First off, we’ve discovered a new YnS doujin visual novel which we’ll be translating. An incredible find, with 14 CGs and a decently long story — we’re looking for translators (N1/N2) to help us with this. Ping CaptainClaw in the Discord server to apply.

We’re also thrilled to announce that the first drama CD we’ve been editing, Icha Icha no Sora, has fully finished TLC, and the first two tracks have been fully timed and subbed. We’re diligently working on subbing the remaining tracks with the completed translation.

We’ve wrapped up the first volume of the anthology manga, with final chapter 18, and work has already started on the second volume. But that’s not all! We’ve scanned four new YnS doujins, and two of them — Sora Ai and Sora ori snowin’! — have already been translated. Head over to our new Misc section for the links! (We’ll release the other two once they’re translated.)

On another note, the Kozue no Sora animation project we mentioned earlier was deemed too complex given our current resources. Instead, we’ve decided to channel our efforts into creating our own visual novel to tell this story. This ambitious project will take some time to come to fruition, but we’re determined to make it happen. We currently need a writer to help adapt the translated storyboard into a VN script — apply to an admin in the Discord server if you think you can help.

In other news, progress on Kozue’s route for HnS is still ongoing, albeit slowly, as Taiga is currently out of the country. Potla is working on the TLC for Yahiro’s route and is making good progress.

We’ve also taken on the task of revamping and filling the Yosuga no Sora wiki with much-needed updates. Our goal is to make even the most obscure bits of trivia just a few clicks away. Feel free to contribute to the articles — there’s still a lot of information that needs to be added!

Lastly, we were made aware of an issue with voices not playing in the full patch for the physical edition of Yosuga no Sora. The issue was tracked down and fixed. Please grab the YnS extra file for full patch again from our server and replace the “voice.noa” file in your game’s directory.

Don’t forget to join our Discord server if you want to chat or just grab the latest patches. We’re always looking for translators, so please get in touch if you think you can help!

Stay tuned for more exciting news and updates. We’ll have lots of new things to share as they come out!

New year, new updates!

We’re kicking off 2024 with big updates!

Firstly, we’d like to announce our new project lead, Lynx. She is a well-known and trusted member within the YnS community, whose dedication to the project’s goals is commendable. It’s been a quiet few months, but we’ll be working hard as a community to bring you the same quality of updates you’ve expected of us over these long years.

Regarding HnS, Taiga managed to hit his goal by New Year, meaning Kozue has hit 75% completion! Head over to our Discord server to grab the latest patches.

The long drought in new anthology chapters has also ended, with the release of chapter 16 a few days ago. The translator and typesetter got busy, but we now have a small stockpile built up again, and releases should continue at the usual pace going forward.

One last thing worth mentioning: Sora’s route is now unlocked from the start of the game on digital patches for YnS!

Base and full patches

All of this being said, there’s also a major announcement regarding the patches themselves. Going forward, you will be presented with two types of patches for both editions of the game: base and full.

Base is virtually identical to the type of patch you played on up to this point.
Only the story itself and the GUI will be translated, and installation works the same as before.

Full is a patch made for those who want their game to be fully localized.
All visual elements in the game (CGs, title, etc.) will also be translated, but it may require extra steps to install depending on your edition of the game (see below).

For digital editions, everything is included in the archives distributed on our Discord server. Simply unpack the archive in your game’s installation folder and you’re all set.

For physical editions, things are a little different due the structure of the files. Archives distributed on our server only include files for the story and the GUI. You need to download supplementary files (links in the server) if you wish to have everything localized. You can keep installing subsequent updates to the game’s story without having to reinstall those. see MAJOR UPDATE – Significant improvements to the patch for up-to-date instructions.

Please note that all technical fixes mentioned in the previous blog post are included in the full patch, so you don’t have to choose between fixes or full localization. Also note that, due to temporary technical limitations, text for confirmation boxes is currently not translated in any physical patch.

See you next time!

100% Sora Edit Release

You heard that right. Lynx just gave word of her completion, and shared her files! This is one of the most important milestones in project history. So all the praise goes to Lynx! However do note this does not mean that Sora is in her absolute final form, as there are still bound to be some lines with issues. But this is basically it… If you see issues, please report them in the Discord server in the appropriate channel (#report-errors-here). Discord would also be where to download the patch.

Lynx moves on to her next endeavour… Sora’s HnS route. The slow perfection of Sora’s story into English is still a WIP!

As for everything else… there has been a delay in the anthology manga, but nevertheless expect a full release of Volume 1 soon after New Years. Drama CDs are very close to being released, I swear this time, we will aim for the first CD to be released on New Years! And then more CDs soon after. And Kozue should also be at 75% by New Years.

In other words, our next 2 updates will be anthology manga chapters, and the third one after that (should be New Years) should be a big update with lots of various goodies. So stay tuned!

QoL improvements for base patches

The GUI for all versions of YnS and HnS were revamped from the ground up.

Digital GUIs are finally fully translated and five display font options were added.
Physical GUIs are mostly translated, with the exception of some text strings that are currently too complex to alter in the code of the game.

Along those changes, some minor bugs found in the vanilla game were fixed. (Yes, even awesome games have their issues!) For example, the night view of Yahiro’s store in YnS had some stray shadows left from the day view. A video explanation is worth a thousand words.

Also in YnS, an audio file was not trimmed properly and ended up containing two lines of dialogue instead of one. It’s all the more obvious if you let the file play through, as the second line of dialogue plays again! Here’s a video.

All these new things and more are now included in the patches!
(For physical editions, please head over to Discord to download supplementary files needed to apply those fixes.)
