About Us

For more than a century, Greater Milwaukee Urban League has stood in the gap, working hard to empower communities and change lives for African Americans living in the greater Milwaukee area.

Greater Milwaukee Urban League was founded in 1919 and is one of 90 affiliates across 34 states and the District of Columbia. Our founders, a racially diverse coalition, believed that working together, the lives of every American can be made better. Our partnerships in Milwaukee and Wisconsin reflect that same diversity. Our commitment to empower communities and change lives is as strong now as it was in 1919.

What We Do

What We Do

Collaborating with our partners, donors, and staff, GMUL offers programs in education and employment that open doors to opportunities that give individuals and families the chance to improve their lives and their community. Our advocacy and civic engagement efforts tackle serious issues impacting the community and seek partnerships and solutions to successfully address them.

Education

Our education programs support youth through school partnerships, STEAM learning, peer mentoring, and scholarships with laptop awards for graduates.

Employment

We help individuals assess job skills, connect with training, get driving permits, and access transportation to jobs not served by public transit.

Economic Empowerment and Outreach

We lead efforts to increase homeownership, improve health outcomes, and promote voting access through successful Get Out The Vote outreach.

Civic Engagement

We listen to community needs and work with leaders to develop practical solutions that move Greater Milwaukee forward together.
