CoLab (Concept)

A New System for Innovation in the Built Environment

This 68-acre master plan was created to redefine the built environment with sustainability and innovation at its core. At its heart, the CoLab—a public-private partnership—was envisioned as a living laboratory to revolutionize construction, restore America’s leadership in building innovation, and improve the human experience globally.

More than a collection of buildings, this campus was planned to integrate bio-inspired design to meet high-performance environmental standards. LJC’s team led the concept for the site’s redevelopment, ensuring seamless integration of built and natural environments. Specialized research labs were designed to focus on wetland restoration, soil health, solar energy, water filtration, and wellness-oriented landscapes.

Located in St. Louis, the campus was intended to leverage the city’s central position to establish a global hub for fabrication, construction, and technology. By revitalizing North St. Louis County, it aimed to generate jobs and economic growth, positioning the region as a leader in sustainable building practices.

An 80,000-square-foot facility was planned to anchor the campus, dedicated to material science and construction technology. In partnership with a world-leading plant science institution, it was designed to explore plant-based materials to reduce waste and costs. Envisioned to give back more than it took, this campus aimed to foster sustainability, lifelong learning, and social change, shaping a prosperous future for all.
