Shredding, burning, and dismantling them in “backyards” releases toxic materials like lead, Cadmium, Mercury into the environment, damaging human health and the environment, especially Children who are especially vulnerable to the effects.

The R2 standard is described as “Responsible Recycling (“R2″) Practices for Use in Accredited Certification Programs for Electronics Recyclers”. R2 is specifically created for the electronics recycling industry by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI), recognized by the federal governments GSA Bulletin FMR B-34 Disposal of Federal Electronic Assets.
