Our DNA / history
From Vision to Reality
Switch Datacenters was founded in 2009 by Gregor Snip and a team of entrepreneurs with a bold vision: to build standardized modular, high-quality and sustainable datacenters that power the future digital economy.
After operating a leading cloud infrastructure provider since 1998, the team saw the limitations of traditional datacenters for ISPs and built its own ultra energy-efficient datacenter — AMS1 launched in 2009 in Amsterdam Southeast, with 10 MW of capacity unique for its time, delivering flexible colocation,. This datacenter was sold to Equinix in 2019.
By designing, building, and operating their own datacenters, the team developed a wealth of practical knowledge, secured patents, and build experience, quickly evolving into a high-quality, cost-effective, and sustainable datacenter operator and developer.
After selling their cloud services division, the team focused entirely on building a high-quality European datacenter platform, purpose-built to serve the world’s top 100 cloud companies.
In 2015, Switch Datacenters partnered with IBM, acquiring and upgrading one of their datacenters, now AMS2. Since then, the company has focused on serving renowned international cloud companies. The first built to suit operation under SLA was AMS3 in 2017 for a major global cloud provider.
With capital generated from the sale and further asset based funding and sustainable financing there was ample room for further expansion.
Since then, the company has secured multiple large-scale sites in Amsterdam (AMS4-AMS9) and new locations across Europe, targeting IT capacities of up to 100 MW per site, all featuring scalable, cost-effective, and sustainable operations.
AMS4 opened in 2024, marking a new evolution in high-quality, modular data center design at the heart of Amsterdam’s internet hub. The facility was fully leased to three leading cloud technology companies prior to its opening.
