Hi, this is my livejournal. I use it for both personal and fannish purposes. Posts of the first type are mostly f-locked, while the fan stuff is mostly public. I have archived my old fanworks here... basically because I just like having it all linked here together in one place. (And btw most of this shit is really old. At this point, this index kind of feels like a memory-box of elementary school art to me.)

I have fallen into a black hole. Its name is tumblr. I may never come back.
Title: Stay
Pairing: Valjean/Javert
Music: Find a Way by Safetysuit
Source/Film: Les Miserables (2012)
Warning: Spoilers. Straight off the bat in the summary. But Les Mis is really not about suspense, so... I would not worry.

Just in case this wasn't already obvious!! I have fallen hard for the Les Mis fandom. I'm not sure when I last fell so hard. I mean, I have, I think, five vids in progress right now -- and, and, I am even writing fanfic. (But only secretly, on the kinkmeme.) It has been a gateway fandom for me, too -- into the weird world of tumblr. That place is like... where you can go mainline your obsessions. I'm still not really sure how it all works, and I haven't made any effort whatsoever to make my tumblr look nice, but.
Also, I made an AO3 account, finally, so I can start bookmarking things. I'm not sure why it took me so long to realize what a wonderful website that is. It's just so well set-up.
I do wish though that the fandom was more active on LJ. Outside of the kinkmeme, I mean, where everyone is anonymous. LJ is just a better place for... idk, having discussions and getting to know people. When you make the effort, which -- I know I've been a disappointing LJ friend for a while now -- but. Shit, I don't even know where I'm going with this. I regret that I don't know many of you well at all. But I still think it is a good place for friendships... Just, unfortunately, it is hard for some of us (me) to keep up when our interests change. Meh, this post ended up more of a downer than I meant it to be.

Title:Between the Bars
Fandom: Les Miserables (2012)
Music: Elliott Smith's "Between the Bars"
Run time: 1 minute, 18 seconds
Subject: Valjean and Javert, two sides of the same coin, both victims of poverty and society and shame. Shippy feels. Little tiny hint of fix-it at the very end.
I don't want to say too much about any of this, because if it's any good as a fanvid, it should mostly speak for itself -- that's kind of the point -- but I kind of just want to it out throw there that since that scene with the medal-pinning made its way into the movie, it's become a little piece of head-canon for me that Javert, on some level, kind of identifies with Gavroche at the end, as another stray wolf-pup, who found a very different pack and calling but served it with equal faithfulness. (But of course, that relativism, and the waste it and hollowness it implies in all he's done, is too much for him to accept -- aaaaand it's all Valjean's fault, somehow, because somehow Valjean has transcended all of this.)
...And all of this rambling is really only relevant to a two-second clip a full minute into the vid (with the line "you've been before"). So. Make of that what you will?

I have two posts in my head. One is sad and boring. The other is fannish. So let's go with the latter. Everything is Jean Valjean/Javert and nothing hurts.
Ah, Les Miserables. I am trudging through the book. But I am not going quickly because I keep reading fanfiction instead and especially because I cannot stop compulsively vidding. I am on my third attempt here. Started with a cracky and rather tongue-in-cheek tone with Lady Gaga ("Judas") and then moved onto wildly melodramatic and epic with Florence and the Machine ("Cosmic Love") and now I have settled into melancholy and wistful with Elliott Smith ("Between the Bars")... This evolution of song selections may perhaps reflect the increasing levels of seriousness with which I ship this ship, lol. I'm going to finish this one, I can feel it. It's nearly there now.

I had this list set to "private" because I wanted to keep working on it and make sure I'd put together all the gems I like best, but, uh. I've become overwhelmed with how much good J/V fic there is, so the thought of "finishing" this, or getting it up-to-date even, became kind of... Well, I'm just going to post it as is. Maybe someday I'll come back and fix it it up. But for now, I may as well just make this public and leave it here for anyone who might stumble along.
Toulon
Beneath the Lash by Michelle Mercy
An uprising breaks out in the prison and Valjean and Javert are caught in the middle of it.
Gone by Corvid Angel
Javert is troubled by dreams. (Ho, boy, repression!) This one follows the 1978 movie where Valjean's final escape attempt is successful.
Montreuil-sur-Mer (and beyond)
Themis Diana & Beggarman Thief by silverbird13
Two very well-written little fics featuring female!Javert and female!Valjean. Yay genderbending!
But M le Maire-- by Michelle Mercy
Valjean and Javert play cat-and-mouse.(Or gay chicken.)
Punishment by aunt_zelda [R]
After Javert makes what he believes to be an egregious mistake (accusing the mayor of being a convict), he begs to be punished... Against his better judgement, Valjean agrees. Features barely-closeted-submissive!Javert, repressing-lots-of-anger!Valjean, D/S and UST! Warning: Dub-Con.
*The Man You Take Me For by scioscribe
An understated but devastating exploration of what life might have looked like for Valjean (and Javert) if he had remained Mayor instead of revealing his true identity when another man was falsely identified as him in court.
*Three Days (or The One Where Javert and Valjean Take a Road Trip Through France and Raise a Child) by zamwessell (greencarnation) [NC-17 in later chapters]
Exactly what the title says. When Valjean promises that three days are all he needs before he'll let Javert take him back to prison, Javert calls his bluff and accompanies him to retrieve Fantine's orphaned daughter. Awkwardness, fluff, angst, lots of UST and eventually smut ensues, and all of it is delightful.
No Worse Than Any Man by Waltzin Atlana
Another look at a world where Valjean remains mayor, but this time, it's out of his hands. Told from Javert's perspective, as he is slowly won over by the general awesomeness of Monsieur Madeline.
Trespass by Corvid Angel [R]
Javert agrees to give Valjean one night of freedom before taking him to prison. Valjean wants to make the most of it, aaaand all the sense of Javert's world is shattered.
Paris/the barricades
Simple, Crude, Insufficient Words by MsBanks
"In which Javert goes undercover at number 50-52, desperately attempts to remain on the right side of the fine line between love and hate, and is wrong about nearly everything nearly all of the time."
Sachant. by Auntarctica, Greekhoop [NC-17]
Valjean rescues Javert at the barricade... Assumes a prior relationship back in Montreuil-sur-Mer. Dub-con.
Post-river...
*my heart lies buried like something dead by Cinaed
Valjean convinces Javert to live. Sometime later, Javert returns the favor.
*The Drowning Sky by zamwessell (greencarnation) [R/NC-17]
Valjean pulls Javert out of the river and takes him home to recover. Javert, figuring he's already damned, tries to drag Valjean down with him, or make Valjean punish him, or something (I don't think Javert is very clear on what his own motives are here). But that's not exactly what happens.
*The Resignation of Inspector Javert by wraithwitch
Valjean pulls Javert out of the river and takes him home to recover. And they talk things out, a lot, and very eloquently! (And then have sex. But I guess that chapter is optional, like a choose-your-own-adventure.)
The Final Exile of Jean Valjean also by wraithwitch
Sequel to "The Resignation of Inspector Javert," in which Javert and Valjean talk things out some more, but this time it's Valjean under the microscope and Javert in a healthy place mentally at last.
*As Lucifer Fell by Sue
An apparition stops Javert from going through his plan to commit suicide. Instead, he seeks out Valjean.
A Christmas Tale by Sandi
Sequel to "As Lucifer Fell."
Between the Dog and the Wolf by AmZ
"A month after the barricades fall, Valjean finds himself in the middle of a mystery. Violence, language, mild sexuality." AmZ has a unique and compelling take on Javert. (While most J/V fanfic reminds me of Rorschach/Daniel (if you're familiar with Watchmen), this series to me feels much closer to Holmes/Watson than anything else.)
Port au Change by Arlene C. Harris
This one has been published, and looks quite good from the sample I read!

I would really like it if my friends-page became overrun with Valjean/Javert fanworks, the same way it's been overrun in the past with Erik/Charles and Rorschach/Daniel, and Tony/everyone, etc., etc.
Wait, I skipped some things. How did this even happen, how did I get to this point? Should I write up a review of the movie?
Eh, maybe later.

Thanksgiving weekend was busy and happy for me -- I spent pretty much the entire time surrounded by family, saw all my siblings, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, both parents. My siblings and I took my mom out for brunch on Sunday to celebrate her 60th birthday. It went really well, everyone had a good time. It was nice.
I think though, that I caught something from one of the kiddos, or from my brother possibly, because now I am feeling crumby. I stayed home from work today and have been sitting around reading Team of Rivals. I have been making pretty quick progress.
Because, see, on Saturday, I went and saw "Lincoln." My reaction has followed a trajectory that is by now pretty familiar to me: first, restrained optimistic curiosity - I go in sort of critical and skeptical but open to getting fully swept up in the story. (The audience burst into applause at the end -- I smiled and thought, "Yeah, it was good.") Then I go home and think over the little things about it that bugged me*. As well as the things that impressed or intrigued me. I find myself preoccupied with it. Keep digesting it and then just... want more of it. (I would be vidding it now, if I could. (I even have a song picked out.)) I watched a History Channel documentary on Abe Lincoln, then started Doris Kearns' book which inspired the movie. This is what it looks like when I discover a new fandom. (But guys, I can't be developing a crush on Lincoln, because, seriously, that's just weird.**)
**However, it is probably perfectly reasonable to have a crush on Daniel Day Lewis. And Daniel Day Lewis totally has a crush on Lincoln, so, you know.
... And now back to reading Team of Rivals.
*( edited to discuss what bugged me (the minorest of spoilers)Collapse )
Okay, silliness aside: Here we go -- this article "Lincoln Against The Radicals" is fantastic and digs deep into the issues that were bothering me about this film and its focus, that I couldn't quite pull apart. I really don't know enough of the history involved. The article also includes links to other good, provocative articles on the subject.
Silliness back: I don't know how long this sudden fascination will stay with me, but I feel right now that I am straddling a bizarre divide of possibilities; do I go on to devour works by scholarly historians and transform into a casual Civil War and Reconstruction era buff? Or do I surrender my brain to more fannish rot and go the way of "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer."
