Last Month of Summer
It was now August and soon things would pick up again. But there was something else and that was now it had been about a year since Malika had stumbled up to Aisper City. It was hard to believe at points but the Anubian Jackal really felt at home here, even if she still lived in the palace in the area where Nicholas and his family stayed at. Despite how she hated the fosky, the female had to admit it was easier to live there and the rulers didn’t mind. They liked her plus it was thanks to this she often got to see Morgan and Rachel. Although he didn’t have to show her around by this point, the long-haired male was still required to be with her for things by order of the rulers here. He hated this as the female did to. But somehow, the long-haired male did a little less. However, at one point Morgan did bring something up with Malika. “Do you realize just how long you’ve been here?” the coyote asked her friend.
“Yes, I do,” the second female replied. “I can’t believe I’ve lived here this long for a year.”
“You’re used to this place?”
“Very much,” Malika answered. “This has now become my home.”
“Although… I don’t think once since we’ve become good friends, you’ve ever spoken about your past at all. Not even to the rulers here.” The second female’s face didn’t go dark, but a look of hurt and pain came to her face.
“Oh… still not ready to talk about it?” the coyote whispered.
“Sorry, it’s just…” Malika whipped a tear that had formed. “It’s very painful. I lost everything; my whole life before I came here…”
Morgan just hugged her friend and the Anubian Jackal took comfort in that. “I understand,” the coyote told the second female. “I’m know we can’t replace what you lost but… at least you now have us…”
“I know… Thank you. I’m so glad we’re friends.”
In the meantime Nicholas was thinking it had been about a year since Malika had come to Aspire City. “It’s really been quiet a time with her,” he said out loud.
The guy thought of the crazy stuff that had happened with Malika so far. Despite her attitude, it hadn’t been all that bad. “Well, we’ll see how much longer she stays for,” the guy thought in his head. It didn’t seem like the Anubian Jackal had plans of leaving the palace anytime soon. The guy let out a sigh.
“Guess I have to put up with it longer,” Nicholas said.
“With what?” went a voice, causing the fosky to jump. Looking showed it was Remy.
“God! Remy; you scared me!” the long-haired male stated.
“Sorry friend. I just overheard you, no?”
“Dude, you ever heard the phrase, respect other’s privacy?”
“I try to,” the male rat said with a grin.
“Well what are you doing here?” the fosky asked.
“Trying to find Morgan as we’ll soon need to register for the tournament next year. Miss Cherry and Rex are on board with it.” He usually rolled the r’s when saying the female mouse’s name.
“Oh yeah, that does need to happen,” Nicholas agreed. “Yeah, let’s see if we can find her.”
The two males did so and the coyote was for it. But then came a moment between Nicholas and Malika as always. He found her at the castle garden just enjoying the flowers here. The fosky was just about turn around when the female noticed him. “And what do you want?” she asked with a frown.
“I can enjoy this as much as you,” he shot back, frowning to and had his arms cross.
“Hmph! It’s not big enough for the two of us!”
Nicholas rolled his eyes in anger. “Fine, then I guess I leave so the princess can be alone!” he snarled. “Must be great when the only friend you’ve got is Morgan!”
“That’s none of your business!” Malika snarled back. “Who my friends are which more than just her!”
“How she can stand you, I’ll never know!”
“I don’t even know how she can stand you!”
The two were seething with anger and about to go to blows. Just then the coyote herself appeared. “Alright, I think this situation needs to unwind,” she said, causing the other two to snap out of it.
“How long have you been here?” Nicholas asked, blushing slightly, his voice changing. Malika noticed this quickly.
“I heard the yelling. I knew I had to reach you both before you really started to fight. I imagine some would be angry with you two.”
The Anubian Jackal and long-haired male let out a breath. “You’re lucky she came here…” Nicholas said to Malika and turned to leave.
“I can take care of myself when it comes to you,” she growled.
“Not when it comes to actually fighting,” the fosky shot back with a smirk and his face towards her. “Unless you’d like to prove it otherwise?”
“Enough!” Morgan said with her own growl, causing the other two to look at the coyote with surprise as they had never seen her get angry. “Look you two, can you give it a rest?” She place her right index finger and thumb on her temples and rubbed those a little. “Like maybe the time you two danced together?” The male and Anubian Jackal just glared at the other and shrugged. “Well you might have to learn to work together.”
“As if!” Malika stated.
“Well be prepared it might happen.”
“We’ll see, but I’m not going to be holding my breath,” Nicholas replied. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be heading back inside.” The two females watched him walk off.
“How do you stand him?” Malika asked Morgan.
“Come on, he’s really great,” the coyote told her. “I’ve said it before.”
“I just can’t! It’s like oil and water, we don’t mix!”
“Although… if you had to work with him, like say if Rachel needed protecting could you?”
The Anubian Jackal didn’t like to think of that situation not just because of the fosky, but of having that little one be in danger. She let out a sigh. “Fine, if it happened in theory, I suppose I could…”
“Exactly! And I’m sure there would be other times and situations that you two would have to team up.”
“I don’t see how…”
Nicholas in the meantime was walking and still getting over his anger at what had happened. “Seriously, what is with Malika?!” he growled softly. Even after knowing her for a year, the guy still couldn’t figure out why she acted like this only with him. She was perfectly normal around everyone else; it was just with him. The guy saw her smile, heard her laugh, dress up for the event so far, was good with Rachel, and others. So then what made him different? Nicholas couldn’t figure it out. And he doubted that she would tell him. The long-haired male wondered if maybe he should ask someone else to find out. Then he shook that idea as Malika might not even tell them the reason. Maybe this was one of those things the guy could try to ask her or trick it out of her. Even so, something was going to have to change.
“Although… she’s pleasant and nice, even beautiful in a sense with other things…” the guy thought in his head. But it didn’t seem like it would ever be that way for him and her. Nicholas did admit at first she provided him with a challenge and he accepted it. But now, it was a little tiring at points, like during moments of calm. Perhaps things could be different in the future. But next month was when things would get tougher for the two as something would happen that would make Morgan’s words come true.

Next month it'll get interesting and for what is to come for me and her.
