Pipe Handling Procedure

Handling

  • Always make sure that thread protectors are properly in place/fastened.
    • In the event of the drill pipe lacking the thread protectors the pipe should be marked for inspection
    • Care should be taken for special service drill pipe or such equipment with special coatings.
  • Use rope slings to control pipe when off loading by hand. When off loading by skids then ensure that the pipe does not roll so fast that it gathers uncontrolled momentum. Also ensure that the pipe does not strike each other.
  • When using a crane use a spreader bar with choker sling, the sling should be double wrapped.
  • When rolling pipe ensure that the pipe remains parallel to the pie rack.

Storage

  •    Do not pile on the ground
    • They should at all times be supported
      • The support should be higher than 18 inches of the ground
    • The pipe should be spaced such that it does not sag
    • If piling in layers then the appropriate separators should be used to ensure that the couplings do not support any weight
    • The separator strips should be a right angles to the pipe
    • The pipe should be staggered by a length equivalent to its coupling length
    • Pipe should not be stacked higher than 10ft.
    • Pipe in storage should be inspected regularly and protective coatings applied to delay corrosion
