Pilot 2: Water/Waste Management IoT Critical Infrastructure

GREENCITYZEN provides IoT Solutions for managing water infrastructure including sewer network, drinking water and irrigation network. GREENCITYZEN provides sovereignty to their customers with open, standard and reversible solutions.

In this context, security is an emerging subject on the market and may be the main subject in the near future. As a partner of the project, GREENCITYZEN provides a water management use case in the smart city context that will be practically deployed into the field and will include emerging open-source security solutions from the project’s partners as services. The solutions will be used in order to validate and benchmark the open-source solution’s cybersecurity and the overall SecOPERA framework Environmental IoT solutions build knowledge of natural resources through connected sensors. The knowledge is then used to take the best decisions to save energy, natural resources and carbonation. In this context, the IoT devices usually need great autonomy and use very low bandwidth connectivity for that purpose. LPWAN connectivity is usually targeted to meet that requirement. In this context of low bandwidth network cybersecurity is a challenge. Furthermore, GREENCITYZEN deploys those solutions in the context of the sustainable city. The city authorities are now requiring high level of sovereignty. Meaning that they require open interfaces to be able to reverse technologies and vendors. This last point is our second cybersecurity challenge. In that water management context cyber-attacks could lead to pipes destruction due to water hammer, huge water leakage or vegetal perdition.

GREENCITYZEN deploys its IoT solution in France and abroad. The company owns an experimental and testing lab including devices, Lora WAN gateways, network servers and an advanced IoT platform.

Technology gap to be filled by the SecOPERA solution:

Here are some examples of vulnerabilitie and scenario we aim to cope with SecOPERA project:

Impact of SecOPERA on the pilot: Cybersecurity is becoming an important business enabler. Cybersecurity is becoming a “must-have” for large-scale deployment in the smart city. Adding those new features to our solutions will bring significant competitive advantages.
