Research

These are the research projects I am, or have been, involved in. Click here for a list of publications.

You can check out the code I have written on my GitHub page. I’ll try to post things that I am working on and code from my papers, however I probably wont be able to commit model runs that I have completed – if you are interested in those then let’s talk!

Dust stimulated drawn-down of atmospheric CO2 as a trigger for Northern Hemisphere Glaciation

Investigating the sensitivity of oceanic productivity and atmospheric CO2 concentration to iron input from dust, sea floor sediments and hydrothermal activity in the deep ocean.

Ocean carbon reservoirs and the air-sea fluxes of CO2 in a changing climate

Developing a tool to map and quantify the ocean’s carbon reservoirs and the regional physical/biological drivers of the air-sea fluxes of carbon dioxide.

Quantifying Weather and Climate Impacts on Health in Developing Countries (QWeCI)

Epidemic outbreaks of vector-borne diseases such as malaria can occur as a result of climate anomalies. Using seasonal forecasts of meteorological variables could allow prediction of epidemic risk with potential lead times on the order of months.

Investigating the physical and chemical forcing of diazotrophy in the subtropical Atlantic Ocean

A cruise to quantitatively investigate the link between iron supply and nitrogen fixation in the sub-tropical Atlantic.

Role of the Southern Ocean in the Global Carbon Cycle.

Changes in physical forcing and biogeochemical interactions in the Southern Ocean have been invoked as explaining changes in atmospheric CO2 in the past and into the future. What are the mechanisms by which the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current interact with the global climate and carbon cycle?

Antarctic Deep Water Rates of Export (ANDREX)

Quantify the role of the Weddell sea in ventilating the deep global ocean, and in sequestering carbon and nutrients in the global ocean abyss.

Water mass structure and mixing near Cape Farewell, southern Greenland

Sinking of water masses at high latitudes is one of the main drivers of the global ocean circulation. What are the characteristics of the flow of waters in the boundary current system around the southern tip of Greenland? How does interaction with the seafloor alter the properties of the North Atlantic overflows?
