Scratch 2 is the second major release of Scratch, a free, block-based programming environment developed by the MIT Media Lab’s Lifelong Kindergarten Group. Designed primarily for ages 8–16 (and used by learners of all ages), it enables users to create interactive stories, games, and animations by snapping together visual code blocks rather than writing traditional code.
Scratch 2 introduced a browser-based editor built on Adobe Flash and an offline editor (Adobe AIR) for Windows and macOS. Key features include custom blocks with parameters, sprite cloning, broadcast messaging, cloud variables for simple online data storage, a vector and bitmap costume editor, a built-in sound editor, and a “backpack” for reusing assets across projects. Projects are saved in the .sb2 format and can be shared and remixed within the Scratch online community. The offline editor also supports selected hardware extensions such as the PicoBoard and LEGO WeDo. While Scratch 2 has been superseded by Scratch 3 (which runs without Flash), it remains relevant for legacy projects and curricula.
Scratch 2 is developed by MIT and is used by 377 users of Software Informer. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 2.434, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5 and 4.6. The names of program executable files are Scratch 2.exe, Scratch2.exe.
