Essentials for Math Instruction Training Series

Tennessee Department of Education

SchoolKit designed and delivered an intensive, customized mathematics training course for the Tennessee Department of Education to deepen the math content knowledge and pedagogy of 4th-8th grade teachers across the state. Our team designed a five-day learning sequence and trained 1,600 teachers, coaches, school leaders, and district leaders in growing their mathematical knowledge and skills to improve instruction, high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) implementation, and student learning. As a result of these trainings, in 91% of participants’ observed classrooms, teachers were spending the majority of the day’s lessons teaching grade-level content.  Over 92% of participants reported significant increases in their ability to use HQIM to support strong math instruction. Subsequent 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data for Tennessee showed a 6-point increase in 4th-grade student math proficiency from 2022, a 7-point increase in 8th-grade proficiency (ranking first in improvement nationally), and double-digit improvements in math proficiency for English Language Learners in both grades.

Foundations of Early Literacy

Denver Public Schools

In a multi-year partnership, we intensively trained over 2,500 Pre-K to 3rd grade educators on instructional practices aligned to Colorado’s literacy standards and DPS’s literacy tools and resources. Our professional learning series deeply engaged educators in the components of comprehensive, research-based reading instruction in both English and Spanish to meet the needs of DPS’ dual-language teachers and bilingual students. After a year of our support, DPS saw a 17% increase in K-3 students reading on grade level and a 6% increase in 3rd grade literacy scores on the Colorado Measures of Academic Success assessment.

Imagine IM K-12 Implementation

School District of Philadelphia

For the School District of Philadelphia (SDP), SchoolKit supports nearly 150 Instructional Support Staff to build both their Imagine IM K-12 curriculum knowledge and their skills to support leaders and teachers with math curriculum implementation. Within six months, we provided over 400 one-on-one coaching sessions across 23 school sites to deepen the knowledge that participants gained through professional learning. Participants have reported that the development they received through our services increased their confidence in navigating and utilizing resources to support implementation, and we observed improvement in their ability to provide more targeted support directly to teachers aligned to the Imagine IM K-12 curriculum. On the post-assessment, participants self-reported significant growth in all five SDP Learning Outcomes from the pre-assessment to post-assessment.  In addition, SDP saw a 6-point increase in its 4th grade NAEP scores from 2022 to 2024.

Early Literacy Leadership Academies (ELLA)

Delaware Department of Education

SchoolKit is in year two of delivering a literacy-focused 5-day training series for over 200 Delaware district and school literacy leaders. This professional learning series supports leadership teams in understanding how to connect best practices for literacy instruction with instructional leadership moves, including setting a vision, implementing high-quality instructional materials (HQIM), and providing teachers and leaders with robust training and support focused on materials implementation and best practices. Participants apply strategies for leading research-based literacy instruction in their unique context and have opportunities to share and collaborate with other district teams. In the words of one ELLA participant, “The learning has greatly impacted my leadership of early literacy implementation. I have… a deeper understanding of the value and process of unit and lesson internalization, and I feel more confident in leading my teachers through this necessary step when planning for instruction. The learning from this cohort has helped me improve as a coach and provided me with so many things to consider as we continue to strategically plan for next school year.”
