Sapan News: Beyond the Headlines
Mission statement: Sapan News aims to produce honest, non-partisan, nuanced, reliable journalism that connects and covers Southasia*, the Indian Ocean, and the diaspora and furthers the narrative of peace, dialogue, and collaboration, expanding spaces for empathy and compassion.
More about Sapan News:
Sapan News is an independent media outlet publishing syndicated stories since a soft launch in August 2021, initially from the Southasia Peace Action Network (Sapan) platform. Sapan is a peace movement launched in March 2021 after an online meeting of nearly 90 ‘peacemongers’ from around the region and diaspora. Dozens of organisations and hundreds individuals have endorsed the Sapan Founding Charter so far.
Sapan News was launched as an independent media outlet with its own website at Sapan’s second anniversary celebration in March 2023.
Sapan News founding editor Beena Sarwar is a 2023 Media Transformation Challenge Fellow at the Poynter Institute, along with 26 other journalists from various media outlets and startups. The challenge, to develop Sapan News from a volunteer-driven organisation into a professional, nonprofit media syndication service, is a work in progress.
Thanks to connections formed through the MTC fellowship, Sapan News became a member of professional journalist organisations like Independent News Network (INN) and Local Independent Online News (LION) in the USA.
Sapan News is also a member of the ACOS Alliance and a signatory to the ACOS Freelance Journalist Safety Principles.

Note on Southasia as one word: We use ‘Southasia’ as one word, “seeking to restore some of the historical unity of our common living space, without wishing any violence on the existing nation states” – Himal Southasian
