Southbound Conrail manifest

A GE hauled Conrail train crosses the diamond and heads onto the street running section, sharp-eyed viewers might spot the covered hopper that derails mid train, we had been having problems with the switch moving under trains!

Exeter Show

Thanks to you all for the kind comments and support at the Exeter show at the weekend, we still had a couple of “holes” in the scenery and we had some niggly technical issues with points and the like, but we still appear to have been well received.

Neil Rogers took some photo’s on the Sunday which can be found here.

Keep checking the blog over the next few days for links to photo’s and maybe a few bits of video as well!

One week’s notice…

Well, here we are again with one week to go before our second appearance at the Exe MRS show in Exeter – last year we were appearing as a very much “work in progress” – this time hopefully the look will be much more complete with at least basic scenery right across the scenic section. We’ve still got a small way to go to get to that stage but we’re not too far away. If anyone is visiting Exeter then don’t forget to stop by and say hi! 🙂

There’s a link to the Exe MRS website with full show details on our exhibitions page – link on the left hand side.

RS Tower

I might have been awful at updating this blog, but i’ve tried to keep the construction pics fotopic site up to date so you folk can see how we’re getting on.

Progress, and a new challenge…

There’s lots more progress to see over on the fotopic site – but we’ve still a long way to go!

In addition our deadline just got shorter with a firm invite now to the Exe MRS show in Exeter. We attended the show last year which was not only our debut, but also debuted a new venue with lots more space and no layouts stuck in dark classrooms!

The Exe MRS have also got a new website with show details, which is clickable here.

The up side is that we’ve already done the hard work underneath to (we hope) get the layout completely working and reliable, most of the work to do is purely cosmetic.

The down-side of this of course is that we now have less than 3 months before the show, and we still have a lot of scenic work to do. Thinking positively for a second most of that scenic work is a basic ground cover and we have many, or even most of the buildings built and even in some in place, but we still have a lot of work between now and then to get the layout basically presentable, and other commitments from some of the team (apparently one of our number has to go and get married between now and the show, which I guess is a decent excuse 😉 ) will mean that getting the scenics presentable in time is a real challenge to face.

And then of course lots more work to get the layout detailed and finished up to the standard we really want it at….

Nervous? Moi?

Construction/open house pics update

Just a quick post to show the latest updates on the fotopic site, click here for the images.

Highlights include a nice brass Chessie caboose from Neil Roper set against the semi-completed bakery structure, the colour-coding of the fiddle yard, and some images from the open house we held at new year (including a few shots with thanks to Andy Joy.) Some of Andy’s shots also show a couple of very nice brass loco’s as well, the EJ&E Baldwin transfer loco and a Rock Island C415 should being rather useful additions to the layout.

The open house went reasonably well, although we spent some time dealing with niggly electrical problems. Many of these should be solved as the last of the point motors in the fiddle yard are installed, although we have a couple of mystery “dead spots” to deal with as well.

Scenery work is progressing slowly, we are still aiming to have the layout with complete

Don’t forget!

Our open house on Thursday – details in the previous post. Some images from our work day are now online here: http://modelrailpics.fotopic.net/c735837.html

RS Tower Open House.

I am pleased to announce the first ever RS Tower open house will be held in
Exeter on Thursday the 3rd January 2008, from 10am to 3pm.
It’s free, but there will be a box around if anyone feels like making a
donation towards the room costs.

The new venue is in Central Exeter:

The Salvation Army
Friars Gate
Exeter
EX2 4AZ.

For access – please use the entrance to the community hall which is in Lucky
Lane (basically it’s round the back!) – there’s a bell if the door is
closed.

There is some local on-street parking (metered) – or it’s only a couple of
minutes walk from the top deck of the Cathedral and Quay car park. We will
have tea/coffee available, but the city centre is only about a 10min walk
away with excellent eating/drinking/shopping establishments in the city or
eating/drinking places on the quay, so bringing the missus for a shopping
trip while you play trains is do-able!

RS Tower ought to be up & running the whole day (well, we have working
sessions on the 1st and 2nd, so there’s a fair shot at this!)  😉

Visiting loco’s/stock are welcome (although they will need to be HO & DCC to
run on RS Tower) – there will probably be a DVD or two playing over the
course of the day, and we’re not averse to folk bringing along stock to try
and sell if they want to get rid of it.

Feel free to forward
it on to anyone else you think will be interested.

This blog is like buses….wait a long time and two turn up at once….  😉

Yeah i’m a bad blogger….sue me…

I know it’s been ages since I updated anything…so here we go. More progress images online now at: http://modelrailpics.fotopic.net/c735837.html

Stay tuned for an announcement about an open house during New Year’s week….which will be soon.

 Honest it will.

Promise.

Housekeeping…

Just a quick note to let you all know that a few pages have been updated – the Module Specifications page now has full details including a couple of diagrams, and photo’s and further info have been added to the pages for Neil Rogers’ Dale Yard and Oakdale modules.

Main Street of the Midwest?

Picked up an interesting link thanks to a chap called Shortliner on the RM-Web forum a few days back that I thought I would share.

http://www.illinoishistory.gov/ is the main site of the Illinois Historic Preservation Society (which seems to be part of the state government.) If you click on Illinois Main Street Design then it takes you to an absolutely fascinating page all about classic ‘main street’ architecture, with an emphasis on maintaining and using older urban buildings, there are two links there of special interest to modellers.

The one posted on rmweb is build your own Illinois main street – which has PDF’s of card building kits. Whilst a scale isn’t given I suspect many are not far out for 1/87th. Even if you didn’t regard them as the final model, they could be used to mock up structures that can be scratchbuilt or kitbashed in plastic later.

The second really useful page is their own project archive, full of PDF’s of real structures that they have given advice on redevelopment for. Especially useful to the modeller here are “before” photo’s showing clearly how the property actually looks at present and especially useful signage details.

Worth a while browsing anyhow. 🙂
