Blockchain Database for Sustainable Biofuels: A Case Study

RSB and Bioledger developed a case study on the potential of a blockchain database to support traceability of biofuel and its feedstocks and overcome the vulnerabilities identified by a recent fraud investigation in the Netherlands. The proposed solution — a blockchain database that enables verifiable proof of origin, secure consignment creation, process simplification, audit efficiency, data integrity, and central governance — was prototyped and trialled with project partners to process a total of 1,927,906 litres of feedstock, accurately representing real-life commercial and operational processes in 2020. The project was made possible by a grant from the ISEAL Innovations Fund, which is supported by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

Since 2017, RSB and Equitable Origin (EO) have been working jointly on a project funded through the ISEAL Innovations Fund to research and develop a means of addressing the challenge of the meaningful implementation of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). The key output from this project is draft framework for a tool that can be used to aid the verification process. The tool is multi-sided, facilitating a “co-audit” process that is jointly implemented by the assurance provider and by the affected Indigenous Peoples’ community.

They are also designed to help operators negotiate with rights-holders and users in line with their right to free, prior and informed consent (FPIC), both in land acquisition and for resolving disputes over land in both proposed and existing operations, in order to help operators avoid and resolve such disputes. The guidelines are intended to guide the operator to apply good practice, minimise risks, respect rights and avoid disputes in relation to land. These guidelines may also be used by the auditor to gain a better understanding of key aspects to be considered during certification process.

The objective of this guidance is to specify the normative requirements for the certification of the harvesting of forestry residues in the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) certification system. This guidance is a normative document within the RSB certification system and constitutes Section 3 of the RSB Woody Biomass Standard Amendment1 [RSB-SA-01]. This RSB Guidance on the Harvesting of Forestry Residues [RSB-GUI-01-013-01] has been developed with the aim of providing further clarity on how to undertake the harvesting of forestry residues while ensuring the sustainability of the forestry practices, in particular, with regards to soil carbon management. This guidance is focused on specifying the requirements for sustainable forestry residue harvesting and sustainable soil carbon management practices (complementing Section 3.2 ‘Sustainability requirements’ and Subsection 3.2.2 of the RSB Woody Biomass Standard Amendment [RSB-SA-01]).

Following the publication of the COMMISSION DELEGATED REGULATION (EU) 2023/1640 of 5 June 2023 on the methodology to determine the share of biofuel and biogas for transport, produced from biomass being processed with fossil fuels in a common process, Participant Operators using a method other than the radiocarbon (14C) testing as the main testing method should regularly use radiocarbon (14C) testing of the outputs to verify the correctness of the main testing method used. The requirements for these methods are set out in the following RSB standards: • RSB-PRO-11-001-20-001 – RSB EU RED Traceability • RSB-STD-11-001 – Standard for EU Market Access This guidance provides further information on 14C test results.

RSB Proactive Guidance on Co-Processing GHG Calculations (RSB-GUI-PG-2025-02)

Following the publication of the COMMISSION DELEGATED REGULATION (EU) 2023/1640 of 5 June 2023 on the methodology to determine the share of biofuel and biogas for transport, produced from biomass being processed with fossil fuels in a common process in line with the European Union Directive 2018/2001/EU on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (RED II), the RSB-STD-11-001 – Standard for EU Market Access and the RSB-PRO-11-001-20-001 – RSB EU RED Traceability were updated to include the established requirements for Co-Processing. One of the main issues in Co-Processing is how to assess and allocate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the production process’s resulting outcomes. This document was created to provide further guidance related to greenhouse gas calculations for fuels resulting from biomass being processed with fossil fuels in a common process, expanding information about the requirements stated in the RSB-STD-11-001 – Standard for EU Market Access, in line with the European Union Directive 2018/2001/EU on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (RED II).

STD-02-001 RSB Standard for Advanced Products (non-energy use)

This RSB Standard for Advanced Products enables producers of non-energy use products and their intermediates to demonstrate sustainable practices throughout their supply chain. Advanced Products can come in different forms. The following product categories are covered by this standard: • Category I: Products that are bio-based. These products are derived from biomass and have a share of bio-based content not less than 25% present in the product; • Category II: Products produced from non-biogenic end-of-life products or production residues; • Category III: Products produced in a production system that processes bio-based feedstock or non-bio-based end-of-life products or production residues in combination with virgin fossil feedstock and that ensures that at least 25% of the virgin fossil feedstock needed to produce the certified product batch are replaced by alternative feedstock (bio-based feedstock or non-bio-based end-of-life products, by-products or residues).

The RSB Standard for Adaptation to Smallholder Groups specifies the RSB requirements for the certification of smallholder groups. Group certification is a mean to enable small-scale farmers (smallholders) to access RSB certification. For individual smallholders, third-party certification is not always an economically viable option. The basic understanding of group certification is that a group of farmers joins together to generate the necessary economies of scale to comply with the standard and system requirements. An appointed management unit will take over the responsibility of managing the certification process and putting the necessary systems in place to ensure the compliance of the individual group members under certification to the respective standard requirements. This standard was previously known as RSB Standard for Certification of Smallholder Groups. From the next scheduled revision, this document will be numbered as RSB-STD-05-002.
