The roulette table bets
To help you understand the different types of roulette bets, we have decided to simplify and group them together. The easiest way to approach the roulette table layout is to look and think of the wagers as two main types – inside and outside. The outside bets are those that run the circumference of the roulette table, and the inside bets are those that are nestled within the entire layout and usually cover the numbers from 0 or/and 00 to 36. The inside layout is used to bet directly on straight-up numbers, but you may similarly bet on combinations of numbers – 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 6.
Now, to make it even easier for you, we have put together a table where you can reference and study all that you need to know about inside and outside bets – where you place them and how they perform. The key difference between bet types is that each one covers a slightly different set of numbers. The payout ratio will matter as well, although the value of each bet will be fixed depending on how much money you are prepared to risk.
| Bet | Type | Numbers covered | Payout | Probabilities (0) | Probabilities (00) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Please take into consideration that there are some changes in the way you place different methods, and you can use the zero or zeroes in combinations with other wagers to form three or four-number wagers. For example, you can place a street bet in combination with zero, like 0-1-2 or 00-2-3. The second example is a corner bet on the 0-1-2-3.
What are announced bets?
Besides using the roulette layout to place a wager, there are other ways to make a bet in a game of roulette, and this is by using the wheel itself! The roulette wheel has a type of bet known as announced or French wagers, and these are placed on entire sections of the wheel. These sections are pre-determined, but they make it very easy to actually plonk down a wager, which may sound counterintuitive to a rooky but is actually a handy way to bet once you get into the flow of things.
So, what announced bets are there? Well, there are several, and they use French names to stand out, specifically Orphelins, Jeu 0, Tiers du Cylindre, and Voisins du Zero. It’s important to understand how these different wagers work because they cover different numbers, and this will be reflected in the amount you stake at once. To help illustrate what we mean, please refer to the picture below:
But how do you place these bets? This is a good question. In order to place an announced wager, you will need to use the racetrack, which is usually posted above the roulette layout on the table. There are four sectors you can choose from and you simply place the corresponding number of chips on the combination you prefer.
If you want to push your betting game a step further you can also tap into the neighbor bets, which allows you to pick the numbers that are close to specific other numbers. This way, you can usually cover anything between 2 and 9 numbers. You bet on a number, the numbers near it, which are masked, constituting a neighbor bet.
Let's say you select 2 neighbors and bet on a 9. Now, the bet will also cover the numbers to the left and right of that 9 you placed a bet on. This way, you have covered 14, 31, 9, 22, and 18 and have also placed five straight-up bets on the five numbers.
Going custom with roulette bets
Right, so besides the traditional bets that we have briefly explained on this page, there are others that you may also try your hand at. They are not necessarily fixed on the layout of the game but are well-established practices that will help you stand out and demonstrate a more robust understanding of the game as a whole.
Snake bet
The snake bet takes its name from what it looks like on the table – a snake slithering its way through with the following numbers covered: 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34.
Finals en plein
This is another type of wager that will essentially require you to bet on one single-digit number and then bet on all the numbers that end in the same number. You can choose one of the ten Finals en Plein options in total, including numbers from 0 to 9. For example, if you bet on 9, you will then want to bet on 19 and 29. If you bet on 2, you will then bet on 12, 22, and 32 as well.
Finals splits or finals a cheval
This type of wager will allow you to place split bets on a combination of numbers that end in the selected two numbers. Alright, this may sound like a lot to get your head around, but here is how it works in practice. Let’s say you want to do a Final Splits 3/7, correct? Then, what you need to do is cover the following combinations: 3-7, 13-17, and 23-27. It’s that simple! Below, you can see all twenty possible combinations of Final Splits.
FAQs
The safest bets you may choose are the outside bets. They give you nearly a 50% chance of winning your wager(for even-money bets), and they are generally considered to be the safest bets you can make in a game of roulette. The game version will play a role in the percentage of a win probability, with double zero roulette offering slightly worse odds.
If you are looking for a bigger payout and don’t mind the risk and volatility, then straight-up bets may be the way to go. However, they only have a 2.70% chance of occurring in European Roulette and 2.60% in American Roulette. The second most risky bet is the Split Bet, which gives you a fairly small chance of winning but is once again offering a very decent payout of 17:1.
Yes, there are betting limits that apply to a game of roulette. First, there is a table limit that is applied universally across the table. However, there are and can be individual betting limits that specifically apply to wager types. Outside and inside bets may have different maximum betting amounts, and it’s very important that players familiarize themselves with this before they play.
No, you cannot really beat roulette but, yes, you can use a betting strategy all the same. Strategies such as Martingale and Fibonacci take into consideration the odds of a wager occurring and advise you on how to approach each game of roulette best. You should definitely play using a roulette strategy, as it will help you potentially win more in the short to mid-term.
No, roulette can never be rigged so long as you play at a trusted casino. Roulette is based on mathematical probability, so you can always understand and look up how the odds work and what your chances are. The house edge will eventually tilt the scales against you and make you lose, but when this happens, it is somewhat random. All in all, you can rest assured that the game of roulette is free of manipulation and completely safe to play.
