wet winter brings forth
worms eager for some compost
in which to warm up
falling factories
leave rorschach blots on the ground:
naked limbs reprove.
I will gather these sad leaves
and have happy spring compost!
I cheat Winter woe
with containers, covers and
paper-bag* blankets.
*(one paper grocery bag – two, nested is better) will take plants in a container if the plants are trimmed or fit so the bag will go all the way to the ground to temperatures ranging from 35 degrees for one to 25 or so for two. Courses of newspaper sections ringing a single paper bag – with another section covering the top) will take a plant through a hard freeze 20-25 degrees or less) The courses of newspapers of 10- to 16-page sections will insulate and later in the spring can be shredded and composted.
Hello, Old Worm.
Have some tres peels for supper
as I change your dirt!
Seventy-gallons spread
over newly dug garden:
my compost at work!
