SNAP Cuts Affecting Refugee Families
As of April 1st, refugees are facing cuts to federal food assistance (SNAP) if they haven’t yet received a Green Card. Read more on our FAQs page.
We know this change will be difficult for some of the most vulnerable refugees who rely on SNAP while they get on their feet. Household budgets for many RefugeeOne program participants will be stretched thin.
Read on for ways you can tangibly support newcomers in need. Your gifts offer stability, comfort, and dignity so refugees can stay the course toward becoming self-sufficient community members.
Give Grocery Gift Cards
Donate grocery gift cards for families in immediate crisis. Gift cards in up to $50 denominations to Aldi, Jewel, Cermak Fresh Market, or Patel Brothers or Fresh Farms on Devon are preferred.
Mail gift cards to:
RefugeeOne, ATTN: Development
6008 N California Ave, Chicago, IL 60659
Alternatively, you can donate to our Refugee Assistance Fund to provide food or rent support to families in a tough spot.
Stock Our Shelves
Refugee families with tight budgets—now made even tighter by SNAP cuts—benefit from distributions of basic necessities like toiletries, cleaning supplies, or seasonal items. In other words, when you don’t have to purchase laundry soap and shampoo, there’s more money to put food on the table!
Your donations stock the shelves at RefugeeOne so we can provide items when someone shows up with a pressing need.
Organize a Diaper Drive
Disposable diapers, baby wipes, and formula are always in high demand among RefugeeOne program participants. Let us know you’re hosting a drive and we’ll let you know what size diapers and what brands of formula are needed most.
Email donatestuff@refugeeone.org to get in touch.
Special Collections
Call on your faith community, neighborhood group, or friends to collect items in bulk so we can more efficiently equip families in need. Let us know you’re interested and we’ll share our most current needs and coordinate a weekday drop off date that works for you!
Email donatestuff@refugeeone.org to inquire.
Other Donations: Furniture, Clothing, Food, etc.
Due to storage limitations and staff capacity, RefugeeOne cannot accept furniture, food, clothing, or other donations outside of what is listed above. We recommend contacting these partner organizations for specific items.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
