Psoriasis is a complex, inflammatory condition that causes scaly patches on the elbows, knees, scalp, and other parts of the body and can also affect the joints. Although psoriasis presents clinically as a dermatologic condition, patients often have comorbid conditions, including cardiovascular disease and metabolic disease, which are believed to result from underlying inflammation.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), is more common in patients with psoriasis compared with the general population. In fact, the relationship is bidirectional, as patients with IBD also have a higher risk for psoriasis. Thus, patients with psoriasis should be screened for IBD to inform disease management and treatment.
