Also called "sleeping sickness," about 30% of people with severe eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) die, and survivors often experience ongoing neurologic problems. Historically, only a few human cases have been reported on average in the United States annually, but in 2024 15 cases were reported in eight states. Although EEE is currently a trending news topic, it is an unusual illness and might be difficult to diagnose owing to unfamiliarity on the part of clinicians.
