Also called "sleeping sickness," about 30% of people with severe eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) die, and survivors often experience ongoing neurologic problems. Historically, only a few human cases have been reported on average in the United States annually, but in 2024 15 cases were reported in eight states. Although EEE is currently a trending news topic, it is an unusual illness and might be difficult to diagnose owing to unfamiliarity on the part of clinicians.

Are you aware of the EEE essentials of how to manage this illness? Test yourself with this quick quiz.
