The most common arboviral illness in humans, dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, which are widely distributed throughout subtropical and tropical regions of the world. The global incidence of dengue has increased dramatically in recent years, with the World Health Organization (WHO) documenting a tenfold increase in reported cases, from 500,000 to 5.2 million. Up to half of the world's population is at risk for dengue in tropical, subtropical, and as the climate changes, more temperate areas of the world. Worldwide incidence of dengue has been the highest on record in 2024, doubling the 2023 rate in the Americas; in the United States, Puerto Rico has been placed under a public health emergency. A patient can also be infected by different types at different times as well as experience reinfection.

Are you prepared to identify, distinguish, manage, and treat dengue fever as well as its more serious variants? Take this short quiz to find out.
