Exit

With thanks to dVerse for the prompt.

Sunset on the New Jersey Turnpike. Image source: Wikimedia Commons (uploaded by user Famartin).
This is love, she whispers
at seventy
miles an hour

as I bend my head
to seek
your golden smile

one last time: not in the
rear-view
mirror but the setting sun,

as though the ocean now
between us
were just another exit away.

Notes

This poem is written in response to Lisa’s dVerse prompt for the week: a quadrille, or poem of exactly 44 words in length, featuring the word “bend” (line 4).

The quoted song lyrics in line 1 are an English translation of the Cantonese pop song 這是愛, which was written and first performed by the Hong Kong rock musician Teddy Robin in 1981. The version I’ve alluded to, however, is Shirley Kwan’s psychedelic cover version for her 1995 bestseller EX: All-Time Favourites:

That is v clever, the speed inducing tension and different mood to soft words..

Many thanks for reading, Ain–this was a fun one to write, particularly from the angle of speed and mood!

Chris, I can’t help but feel that your song is about Shirley and her music, but I could be way off base. It’s a lovely poem no matter who it’s about. Music does have a way of warping the time-space continuum (if this poem is about Shirley and her music.)

    Beautiful song also.

Haha, I suppose her voice has attracted plenty of potential lovers before, Lisa! I won’t say whom its for, per se, but the song does call a few people in my life to mind…
