I'm working on a time-travel fic, so naturally my mind has turned to thoughts of RomeSpringother time-travel fics. Because what better way to procrastinate? It’s a trope that Buffyverse fic writers have thoroughly explored to good effect. That makes it tough to choose! I'll probably have a whole other list or two, perhaps one just for Our Heroes Go Back in Time: To War! But first off: Classic Buffyverse Time travel! This list contains mostly het, some slash, and Buffy or Spike. Usually both. AO3 links, where possible. In alphabetical order:
1.herself_nyc is writing Buffy fic again! She is continuing her Bittersweets opus in the scary story Mr. Grieves and the Vengeance Girl. Give it a look and let her know what you think! (Hint to reader: catch up with previously posted parts of this story here (LJ) or here (AO3), and when Spike reveals his identity to servant girl Kate switch to the new post here.
2. The Headline Awards have been announced! There are several old favorites among the winners in the Giles categories, but also, even better, some I haven't read before! I know what I'll be doing this weekend!
3. The Buffy Rewatch atfantas_magoria is loads of fun! Check it out!
Hey everybody! I am poking my head out of my burrow with some fandom news! No Rest for the Wicked Awards has announced the winners of Round 11 and several of my f-listies are on the list! Congratulations, all you talented people! I got this little beauty:
It's very cool and warm and fuzzy, but the main thing is to keep on ficcing, amirite? There is no better proof of this than an excellent new story, posted just today by one of the winners, beer_good_foamy . Go, read The Queen, The Soldier as soon as you possibly can. No need to thank me.
Also, sb_fag_ends is inspiring an outpouring of seasonal Poe-themed Spuffy, and if you are inclined to enjoy such things you won't be disappointed. Because there are so many stories going up, comments are few, so if you find something you like, let the author know! I've put up a few things, and have a few more in the pipeline, although this week is really far too busy in real life for me to do as much as I'd like. All are on the lighter side, but that is apparently how I'm rolling nowadays. Here they are:
Happy Mothers Day, my dears. Rarewomen 2014 is unveiled, so you should all go see the lady gifts. I wrote some Dollhouse Adelle DeWitt backstory, so if you're into that sort of thing, here it is:
Title: Construct of Paradise Author: Rebcake Rating: PG13 Word count: 1130 Characters: Adelle, Roger, OFC Summary: Adelle didn’t regret the good old days. Even well-educated, well-ordered women like herself should have their period of experimentation.
Today is the last day to contribute to buffyversetop5's look at excellent Buffyverse fanworks of 2012. There are lots. Even if you are pretty involved in fandom, I can guarantee you will find something cool that is new to you. Go! Check it out! Add a list if you can!
Here are links to my "Top 5" lists, because I have this weird thing about lists:
Go! Read! Comment if you love it! Bring a hankie! Then check out the other goodies. Yum!
I contributed something, which I suspect is of limited appeal due to super small fandom, although it is a crossover with BtVS, so who knows? You can read it at AO3, but for consistency's sake, I'm also including it in my journals. I've written another crossover with these fandoms, Two Faces Have I, which I think might be more successful, since it uses the POV of the Buffyverse character we know, while this one uses the POV of the character that is outside the 'verse.
Title: From the Mouth of Hell to Hoppers 13 Author: Rebcake Rating: PG13 Word count: 2400 Fandom/Characters: Love & Rockets "Locas" crossover with Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Maggie, Hopey, Penny, Izzy, Giles, Xander, Faith A/N: All credit to Jaime Hernandez for his characters. ♥ Oh, and Joss, too. Summary: Maggie and her friends are going to spend the afternoon by the pool, unless the "earthquake" from up north puts the kibosh on things.
Basically I got as far as Oxnard and the engine fell out of my car. And that was literally, so I ended up washing dishes at the fabulous "Ladies Night" club for about a month and a half while I tried to pay for the repairs. Nobody really bothered me or spoke to me there until one night one of the male strippers called in sick and no power on this Earth will make me tell you the rest of that story.
—Xander, talking about his post-graduation summer in The Freshman, BtVS Season 4
Hey you guys! xela_fic wrote a lovely comment fic for a prompt I left her, and it is too fantastic to languish as a comment! It's got AtS S5 Spike aggressively drowning his sorrows at a bachelorette party, with hidden tragedy lurking just under the surface. C'mon, you know you want to read it! Here you go:
I may be getting a bit excited about the holidays this year! Some of you look forward to Yuletide, but as it focuses on small fandoms and I am pretty much still all about the Buffyverse, it doesn't tempt me much. However! It looks like there could be an alterna-Yuletide that would include infrequently written Buffyverse women, and that sounds perfectly festive to me! Follow along at rarewomen!
It's nearly time to sign up for noel_of_spike, but you can weigh in with your preferences now. I also just discovered another seasonal gem, btvs_santa, which is a Secret Santa fan work exchange community. Go! Make a wish!
But the fun doesn't stop at year's end! winter_of_faith is accepting sign-ups right now for dates through January, and a Wishverse ficathon is being planned for late winter/early spring over at wishverse_fic.
After a fallow summer, it looks like I might actually finish off this year and start the next awash in fic! What could be more jolly?
I am supposed to be doing lots of productive things today, but instead I have a catch-up post! Yay?
I did a fic for the sb_fag_ends "Something Wicked" challenge. I'm hoping to get another one in tonight, but it's a holiday, so who knows?
Title: Flesh and Bone Author: Rebcake Rating: R-ish Word Count: 725 Prompt: Skeleton Army A/N: A slightly more mundane take on the threat of Mortiflex. Season 6.
I did a very silly (but not classy) Spike/Sally fumetti for littlespikes, 'cos we absolutely need more BtVS/Nightmare Before Christmas crossover material, even if it's no good. Right?
I also am thrilled to report that some kind person nominated a few of my stories for Round 25 of the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards! Specifically, the Mr. Gordo/Miss Edith story No Regrets has been nominated in the Comedy and Unconventional Pairings categories, and Tales of the Cold 'n' Tall Creamery — short stories about Jhiera, princess of Oden Tal, her "girls" and their AU move to Sunnydale — has been nominated in the Series category, which I think is pretty funny. I guess I ought to add a few chapters...
Looks like I've been semi-busy. Have a great holiday, everybody!
Newish Spuffy writer puddinhead (aka thepuddinhead) has started posting the sequel to Yours, William and it is already a gripping, ripping yarn! If you, like me, have a big ol' yen for historical time-travel fic that has fun characterizations, a little action, a little sex, and a lot of culture-clash, well, you should be reading along. Ms. P is a history teacher, but clearly the kind that knows how to make the dusty olden days come alive on the page.
If you want to jump right in, the premise of Yours, William is that post-series Buffy asks to go back in time to pre-vampire William, and ends up in the body of one of his household staff, without slayer powers, but with all her memories intact. Wackiness ensues, romance blooms, someone finds his inner badass a little earlier than anticipated, obstacles are faced and overcome, and when the time comes, Buffy decides to do the honorable thing. My Elizabeth begins with the happy couple boarding a boat for their new life in America, but something nasty awaits them in the cargo hold. In just three chapters (so far) there are old enemies, new enemies, new friends, the challenges of Victorian-era ocean travel and etiquette, and it looks like things are going to take a major turn soon. *anticipates* The prose is lean, the vision clear, and it's a heckuva lot of fun.
The elephant in the room is unbridled_b's Forward to Time Past, against which all Buffy/William stories must inevitably be compared — and for good reason. Repeat after me: gold standard! Rest assured, puddinhead 's series is entirely different in scope and tone, largely because the Buffy we meet is in a much better place emotionally, and has chosen this journey for specific reasons, mindful that Spike was capable of selfless and noble action. For me, it's really interesting to see how much of a difference that makes.
You should also all be reading msjane's award-winning Time's Fool, a 40-years-in-the-future fic that just keeps getting better.
And now, a plea for HTML help! How do you put in both DW and LJ "user name links" in the same post? I've seen it happen in other people's posts, but the code is eluding me! I'd like to know before my seasonal_spuffy posting day. *puppy eyes* Thanks, Snick!
Piffle! It's never too late! Except when it is. *ponders*
I've been home with a sick kid for a few days, but there's been plenty of joy, and some of it from fandom! Can I get a woo and a hoo? 'Cos you guys are great!
First thing to celebrate is the announcement of the winners in Round Nine of the Running with Scissors Awards! There's some great stuff on the list, including a few things by some friends who happen to be excellent writers. So congratulations to brutti_ma_buoni ,duh_i_read , rahirah , and moscow_watcher among others! Well done, all. My silly Giles piece won something, too! Whee! The mods haven't released the pretties yet, only the list of winners, but those are always intensely gorgeous and it just gives us something to look forward to, right?
Also, the buffyversetop5 recommendation site has been going full steam, and I've been viewing and reading tons of stuff that I missed. Which admittedly slows down the writing a bit, but I'm getting a lot out of it. Also, I just happened to luck out and make the 1,000th rec post to the site, which led to fabulous prizes! Virtual confetti, champagne, as well as a couple of months of paid LJ time, and a couple of years worth of extra icons! It brought a joyful tear to my eye, let me tell you! Thank you to the very generous mods, and thanks to all the people who are giving us such great recs! Especially those that are reccing my stories, of course. ;-} I've got a few lists still to post over there, though the more I delay, the more of my favorites get picked off highlighted by listmakers more fleet than I. Maybe I won't have to post anything more because all the good stuff will have already been recc'ed? Ha! Never happen. We could definitely use more pre-series lists, which I'm having trouble compiling from my foggy memory bank. Any suggestions?
Have a wonderful (long) weekend, my lovelies! Think not of the inevitable betrayals of (some of) our fellow men, but the promised land we make of our existence here on earth through kindness, thoughtfulness, and the act of creation.
I keep working on an essay about love, but every time I think I'm getting close to posting, something happens and I can't. Earlier this week lots of people were posting about love, so I thought the time was right. But now? No. I suffer from post-block on the subject or something.
Anyway, I was thinking about the type of love stories that appeal to me, and I realized that they often don't end with "falling in love". The stories about what happens after that are rare, but they can be awesome. Some examples:
I know I've been a bad poster. The fic, it is sporadic. The Con report is non-existent. I haunt the wonderful comms, but I don't contribute enough. My commenting has been infrequent. Such is summer. However, the kid started high school a week ago, the new schedule is officially in effect, and there's every chance that I'll be able to power on soonish.
March has been busy, in a non-fandom sort of way. I kept up with my modly duties at fantas_magoria , and just now managed to (finally) post a new ficlet there, but mostly it's been work, work, work of the non-fic kind. Here's my multi-crossover nod to Gingerbread:
Title:Everyday Heroes Author: Rebcake Rating: PG Word Count: 625 Summary: A typical school day for Buffy, circa Gingerbread. A/N: A few kids from other schools now attend Sunnydale High. See if you can spot the non-Joss teen comedies! Disclaimer: I used a smidge of dialog from the episode, but I don't own anything or anyone!
+++
I also read a story this week that got me all excited! It hits my kink of alternative perspective and it's superb. It might be the best-written piece I've found so far this year:
The Monsters Are Due in Washington Square by liz_marcs Nothing’s the same after the monsters come to town. Set 15+ years post-Chosen, this story shows us the surviving Scoobies through the eyes of an outsider, and the view is like nothing you’d imagine. PG13. Five chapters, complete.
I got a pretty in the December 2009 round over at still_grrr, and I tied myself!
I also tied with deird1, which means there was a 3-way tie for third place in the ficlets division. It's sort of cool, because it shows that there is lots of consistently high quality stuff being posted. I like to think that, anyway. It could also mean that there are too few votes being cast. If you are a member of that illustrious community (and if not, why not?) won't you consider going over and casting your vote for the wonderful January entries for Classic Literature? Seriously, there are some awesome stories to be found there.
Which brings me to my rec. We may know beer_good_foamy as the guy with the funny outlook (and bless him for that), but he has done a dizzying short piece that pretty much tore my guts out, and required multiple hankies. It's a Dollhouse piece, with ultra-mega-extreme spoilers for Season 2 finale "Epitaph Two", so do not click if you haven't finished the series. But if you have, don't miss:
I have ficced! I have recced! I have enjoyed the cultural amenities our society offers! Because sometimes people (from outside LJ—gasp!) want to keep tabs on what I’ve done, I’m putting links to everything here.
First, because it was Giles Week, by decree of dontgetanyolder , I did a drabble and a ficlet in honor of the occasion.
Title: Miss Understandings Author: Rebcake Word count: 100 Characters: Harmony, Giles Prompt: Under Summary: Harmony continues to master the art of cultural exchange.
Title: The Lioness on The Cheese Grater Author: Rebcake Prompt:still_grrr 's 152 – Classic Lit (Lysistrata by Aristophanes) Rating: PG13 for innuendo Word count: 275 Character: Giles Summary: An evening of light reading turns a young(ish) man’s thoughts to, um, spring. A/N: Yes, I’ve quoted the play rather liberally. Once you get started, it’s hard…
The amazing and fantastic xlivvielockex made me a fantastic and amazing slew of Spike/Drac icons for the holidays! What do you call a group of icons? I'm tempted to go with "a murder of icons" in this case, because they will slay you! For reals! Check 'em out. Tell her what you think. Download your favorite Dracula with Spike! It's like a Christmas miracle!
There must be something wrong with me, because I could not stop laughing at this. Y'all did know that "unfriend" is the word of the year, according to the New Oxford American Dictionary folks, right? I prefer "defriend" myself, but I may change my mind after this:
ETA: Dang! You might have to scroll down about 3 images. *sigh*
Okay, I fixed the link to go straight to the correct image, AND I figured out why it's so tickles my funny bone. It uses meiosis, a drastic understatement of the situation, for which I am always a sucker. Ah, the etymology of humor: it's what all the cool kids are doing. Then, when they're done with that, they go look at more funny vampire pictures.
TRADING CLOTHES & RINGING PAVLOV’s BELLby shadowkat67 is possibly the most awesome Spike meta ever. You must read it. It delves into the chip, the soul, and the trigger in a very eye-opening and convincing way. I always appreciated the way the writers on Buffy gave a nod to such things as A Clockwork Orange and The Manchurian Candidate, but this meta points out just how complete and organic those references were, among many other things. I can't even begin to understand how I missed all the amazing (and in retrospect, obvious) stuff about the trigger and Spike/William's entire existence, so you'll just have to see for yourselves. You won't regret it.
There's this newish community that I discovered in the last few weeks, and I think it's got real potential. It's called The Matri-thon, and its tagline is:
You need not be over 40, or a woman, to participate. It's about characters that are over 40 and female. For me, being primarily interested in Joss!verse fic, this covers lots of prime territory: Joyce Summers, Maggie Walsh, and Adelle DeWitt, not to mention all the vampires, gods, demons, and keys that fit the bill. That said, if a person were to write Dawn, they'd probably want to emphasize the zillion-year-old key aspect rather than the teenaged girl aspect.
They are finishing up their first set of ficathon prompts, and will go to monthly challenges starting on Nov. 1, with two "free" days each month. C'mon over! It'll be fun!
I've also been wanting to rec a little fic that keeps nudging me. It's season 6 Spuffy, it's NC-17, it's first person, and it's super short, but it packs a wallop like very few fics I've read. It's not fluffy or funny, unlike the stuff I usually rec. Plus, it's not even in the writer's first language, so it's extra infuriating that it can be so good. Hmph.
As previously mentioned, it was my birthday a couple of days ago, and I'm here to say that you guys sure know how to make a gal feel fêted! Greetings poured in from at least four continents! And, just look at all this stuff my talented f-list made for li'l ol' me! No, really, look at it; it's quality stuff:
Speaking of Snick, it has come to my attention that everybody in the world might not have discovered Seraph, an astonishingly good story by my birthday buddy snickfic. If you haven't tried it, you owe it to yourself.
Apparently, today is my day to spam all of you lovely people. I just saw this on Petzi's journal, and I wouldn't want anyone to miss it (like I did High Plains Invaders last Sunday - which it seems was only shown once *pout*):
Glee 8:58/7:58c Fox Disney might own the High School Musical franchise, but Fox has...the glee club. Snicker at this nerdiness if you will, but creator Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck) adds no small amount of edge as he introduces us to William McKinley High's ensemble. In this new director's cut of the pilot (which first aired in May), club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) even gets a jock to join his nerds. Of course, he must use subterfuge to do it. Glee is scheduled to begin its regular run next Wednesday. — Paul Droesch
DVR this puppy! If you missed it back in May, now is your chance! I happen to know that *ahem* Mr. Joss Whedon is a fan, and so should you all be!
Title: One Good Date Author: Rebcake Rating: PG13 Word Count: 1400 Characters: Spike/Dru Summary: A small interlude in the continuing adventures of Spike and Drusilla in mid-century America. In this installment, Drusilla insists that they visit what Spike believes to be "the sappiest place on earth". Will he survive with his dignity intact? A/N: Can be seen as a prequel/sequel to my drabble Home Sweet Home, but you need not read it for this to make sense. Gorgeous new banner by amyxaphania (formerly ducktheduck). Is it not beautiful?
