  • Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a key part of the UK government’s plans to make it easier for businesses to get their tax right. The UK tax authority (HMRC) require businesses and individuals to keep digital records, use compatible software and submit quarterly VAT updates to reduce the tax gap.
  • MTD for VAT is mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses, and HMRC automatically registers those who haven’t yet registered unless exempt. Businesses must use MTD-compatible software to file returns.
  • MTD for Income Tax starts from April 2026 for those earning over £50,000 and from April 2027 for those earning over £30,000, with a live pilot available for voluntary sign-ups.
  • Legislation & Research: The Finance (No.2) Act 2017 provides the legal framework, with secondary legislation enforcing VAT and Income Tax requirements. HMRC has published evaluations and research on MTD’s impact.
