Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.
Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.
Rename Home Improvement to Homes?
A while back, I asked a question about "home stuff" beyond improvements -- things like cleaning, general maintenance, patio gardening, etc. There was some discussion about gardening, but in general, people seemed to agree with this broader scope. I was particularly struck by something this answer said:
To me, the most succinct statement of the site's purpose is "improving your enjoyment of your dwelling", which covers a lot of such things (and nothing else does).
I think (personal opinion, not speaking for the team yet) that there's enough in this scope to make a go of it. How do y'all feel about a name that conveys this broader scope, and is "Homes" the right name? The intent is to include things about the home environs but not about everything you do in a home (like cook).

A DIY community
My suggestion would be to create a broader DIY community and merge "Home Improvement" with the "Arts & Crafts" proposal.

There is a significant overlap in scope and knowledge of the two proposals. For example if there is a question about how to cut out a piece of metal, it doesn't really matter if the piece will be used to fix a chair or create a piece of jewellery. If there is a question about how to clean a paint brush, it doesn't matter too much if the brush was used to paint a kitchen or prime a canvas.

Based on the activity levels of the existing Codidact communities, I think the resulting scope wouldn't be too broad.
I disagree with the name change, "homes" is too broad and vague. And might confuse users to think it's a place to ask real estate questions etc.
things like cleaning, general maintenance, patio gardening
Those are improvements! Nobody said that question had to be about stuff that requires professional help (ie from a plumber or electrician). There's a whole lot of stuff that you could do yourself, even though the results will likely be better if you hire a professional. Carpentry and gardening are perfect examples of that.
