Gamification: Points, Rank, Badges

Crowdstack includes several different features that support gamification and make your community more engaging and fun for members. This post includes different ways to include gamification, including:

  • Community Rank and Leaderboards
  • Activity Level Titles
  • Graphic Badges
  • Trending Leaderboards

Community Rank and Leaderboards

Crowdstack includes an algorithm that automatically assigns activity points for many actions taken by members. Community Rank can be disabled by Administrators (via Manage > Settings > Members > Member Settings).

Administrators can also customize the points assigned for each action via Manage > Settings >Members > Activity Points Formula. When you change the point values, the changes will only apply going forward; they will not be retroactively applied to previous point totals.

Admins can also manually give (or remove) points from any member via Manage > Settings > Members > Manage/Search by searching for the members for which you want to adjust points totals and then choosing the add or remove points action to apply the adjustment.

The actual community rank numbers are visible on each member's profile page and in the member list (which is sortable by rank), unless you disable Member Ranks, as mentioned above.

With advanced reporting, the admin can also analyze the leaderboard in detail, including members with the most likes received and content with the most page views, comments, or likes. You can choose to share this leaderboard information in your newsletter or other venues to spark competition among your members.

Why is community rank different than activity points?

The community rank is intended to reflect a member's overall "influence" within your community. As a result, it is more than just a measure of activity level of a member, and therefore incorporates more than just activity points. For example, the formula also accounts for the number of followers for each member.

Activity Level Titles

Activity Level Titles are “earned” designations based on a member’s activity (via the Activity Points Formula discussed above)

You would set up graduated titles, based on Activity Points, via Manage > Settings > General > Automation Rules. Create a new Activity Milestone rule. Set the trigger for earning the title (for example, "Member Reaches Point Milestone" and then apply the action of Set Title and supply the name of the title to grant users who have achieved that point level.

Activity level titles will appear on each member's profile page, as well as in the member list.

Add Graphic Badges to Member Profiles

Administrstors can create a custom profile field (image upload format) called "Badges," and make it admin-editable only. This allows the admin to place a graphic image directly on the member's profile.

Use Trending Data to Run Contests

You can use Advanced Reporting data to view content that is popular over a certain period of time. You'll find this in Manage > Reports.

Set up a contest by telling your members to post a video, a photo, or another piece of content, and reward members whose content reaches "trending" status by a certain date. The admin can create an Automation Rule that takes certain actions once a piece of content becomes "popular," for example, like sending a congratulations email to the author, giving the author points, or notifying all Administrators via email.
