Taira was conceived on the last night the Sun Top Circus spent in her mother's small valley town in Norway, a testement to the love of a simple dairy maid and a talented contortionist. Her father was forced to move on with the Sun Top Circus troupe and abandon his family. Alone and distraught, Taira's mother faced remarkable difficulties carrying her baby in the harsh Scandinavian climate. Taira's birth weakened her, and they were forced to move to the far north of Norway to live with family, though this prevented Taira's father from finding them again.
Taira proved a difficult child, and her predilection for climbing and hiding in small spaces irritated her strict grandmother. The young and inquisitive child was troublesome in the scientific research camp, and Taira spent many hours by her mother's bedside, immersing herself in the fabulous worlds of her mother's books. As time passed Taira continued to withdraw from her grandparents and their colleagues, treasuring her time with her ever-weakening mother. Her mother's death, in Taira's ninth year, changed her world, as her grandparents swiftly sent her to a small Catholic boarding school in India.
In India Taira quickly learnt the cruelty of children, teased and excluded for her accent and love of books. She found a rare friend in Brianne, the daughter of an English soldier and an upper-year student. For two years the girls shared a world of imagination and books, bonding over their shared difference. When Brianne graduated, Taira found herself lost and alone once again.
By chance, Taira discovered a dusty computer in the back corner of the library, and a whole new world was opened for her. She discovered many others like her, estranged from their peers and misunderstood by their families. She found the world of fan fiction, and unleashed her imagination and creativity. She found friends, and she found happiness.
But soon, her time in India will end. Taira's future is uncertain. And inperculious, her story continues.
