  • Gardening with my Grandfather

Look at that I did a Double “G” Prompt. It’s true though when my Gramp retired, and we moved to where we are now he tried a few hobbies. I was little so I’m not sure what he tried besides gardening and Painting/Sketching, but those are the ones I remember him working on. I have paintings he did hanging in the house right now. I think a few other do too. Today though is gardening, as In I should do some of that, cause I aint going to paint.

When we moved he went around in the woods near our house and took small trees and shrubs to use as borders on the property. he also bordered out an area for his garden. I suppose it could have been my Gram who wanted it, but he was always out there puttering around in it. I can remember helping to plant and helping to pick from pretty early on. A few years I picked what to plant with the first thing I wanted was Potatoes. Turns out, Potatoes are kinda gross when you dig them out.

This year, as i write this I am thinking about doing a garden. He had those old time life books that gave instructions. I wish I still had them, simple and to the point, unlike the internet where everyone’s opinion has to be on the page you are reading. I just want to know when to plant, I just asked my Alexa… gave me an ambiguous answer. So… Another year will probably go buy without me doing it, out of nothing but confusion.

I think Ill go to the store, get some stuff.

  • Forgetfulness, I forgot what day it was.

Yeah, I sure did. This years A to Z challenge for me is going to be remembering what day it is. I mean, yes… some of us do use Sunday as a catch yup day. I’m not catching up though I really did just forget what day it was. Forgetfulness is more in line with the topic of the blog post for today, let me just go and change the title to match. What’s that old saying you’d forget your head if it weren’t attached?

To be fair This has been an ongoing problem for several years now. When the Bells was diagnosed, we found old stroke damage that explains it (we think), and that’s nice to have something to point to… oh hey, this is why I’m stupid. Still, regular old forgetfulness would be nice. Weird things I have forgotten or gotten distracted over? Well it’s everyday all the time and I have things in place to help me stay on track.

Calendars help, I think I need to put one in my office for the A To Z. I have one on the fridge and I have a white board (smaller) in my office to put quick notes on. I have reminders on my phone to take meds, I have Alexa set up with multiple alarms. I have a binder for Dr. visits with test results and notes in them. In all… I have paper and electronic brains all around me now. It’s Sunday and I was two posts behind anyway.(laugh) go me.

I love my Alexa, I use it for literally hundreds of things. Spelling, synonyms, weather reports. news. I find it very helpful, and sometimes distracting. Have an Alexa Fire Photon Torpedo’s or fire phasers… tell her red alert. This is why I forget things… I forgot what I was writing about listening to her describe the laws of robotics. Wanna really laugh, say “Alexa, tell me some gossip”

What do others use to help them keep track of things.

  • Eclipses – what you should know!

Well first off you should know an Eclipse is a normal occurrence. Tomorrow 4/8/2024 will be the most watched in History (we think) because of how many highly populated areas it will be going through. Eclipses happen anywhere from two to five times a year. This year 2024, we have four total eclipses two solar and two lunar eclipses.

Important things you should already know.

    1. Don’t look directly at the eclipse without safety solar glases.
    2. Don’t try to observe it with eclipses glasses through binoculars or a telescope.
    3. When you no longer see the Sun through the glasses, totality is here you can take them off and look.
    4. One the sun is blocked, stop for a moment and look around take it all in, the world changes.
    5. Totality can last from several seconds to 7 minutes (3 minutes 50sec 4/8/24 at dead center of path)
    6. Enjoy!

Want to make a viewer, here ya go. Used something like this last time. It worked, kind of an interesting thing to do especially if you have kids. If you are still looking for glasses check your local convenience store. 7-11 by me has them. I got some from my local library. You can also order them just make sure they are actually eclipse glasses. Click the picture below for specific information on glasses and safety.

  • Dig Dig With A Hessmart Cup

Once upon a time, when I was young and so were my friends My best friend at the time Tom, and I decided to drive his two wheel rear drive pickup truck into the woods down a, lets say a wagon trail. Sue there weren’t any wagons then, but I don’t really know what caused the trail, it could have been wagons.

We called them fire roads, they looked similar to the above except they were sand paths. Pine tree’s and sand two 18year old idiots in a truck at midning. Not even drinking just laughing and driving through the wood for the hell of it, until… the truck slid just off the “road” and we were stuck. Still laughing Tom tells me to get out and push so I do, leaning into it pushing. Truck digs in further. Now it is tottering on a sand berm, partial from the slide and the rest from the wheels spitting sand into my face. Stuck, in the woods 2 or 3 miles from the road.

What to do … Yep the title says it. We dug it out… thank goodness the moon was out. I don’t remember if it was full but it was enough to see where the truck was balancing. Sand had built up under the middle since it was front wheel drive so we had to dig. Want to guess what we used? Two giant cups from Hess, the “Hessmart” cup 64oz’s of sand digging goodness.

I think it took us about 3 hours to get out, we just chatted and laughed and cussed at eahch other for doing dumb things. We still on occasion will say the words “Dig, Dig” to each other… a call to arms, things done for the sake of nothing but in service to fun. Ah to be young again.
