Open-eCard-App is an open-source client for electronic identity (eID) cards that enables secure online identification with supported eID-enabled services. Developed by the Open eCard Team, it is built on established international standards (such as the eCard-API Framework) to ensure interoperability and trustworthy handling of your personal data.

The app guides you through each step of the identification process, clearly displaying which data a service is requesting and letting you provide explicit consent. Communication between your device and your eID card is protected with modern cryptography, and the app avoids storing personal information longer than necessary. Because the project is open source, its code can be reviewed and audited by anyone.

Key features:

  • Standards-based eID client implementing the eCard-API Framework
  • Support for widely used electronic identity documents (for example, the German ID card and electronic residence permit)
  • Clear, user-friendly flow for online identification and consent
  • Works with NFC-enabled devices and compatible smart card readers
  • Privacy-first design with transparent data handling
  • Open source, community-driven development

Requirements:

  • A supported electronic ID card and PIN
  • An NFC-enabled device or a compatible smart card reader
  • An online service that supports eID-based authentication
