Guided Wilderness Excursions

Okefenokee Adventures offers fully guided and outfitted overnight wilderness trips into the heart of the swamp, ranging from one to four nights. These journeys provide an unforgettable way to experience one of the world’s most iconic wetland wildernesses. Permits are required by the Refuge, and all trips are subject to trail availability and current water levels.

Trip Options and Highlights
One-Night Trips are perfect for first-time canoeists, families with children, or anyone with a tight schedule.
Two-Night Excursions may begin on the east side and end on the west side of the swamp at Stephen C. Foster State Park in Fargo. These trips are ideal for exploring diverse habitats and observing wildlife.

We especially recommend our 2-night, 3-day adventures, which offer the greatest variety in scenery and species. Depending on trail conditions, guests may paddle between 5 to 12 miles per day, covering a total of 25–30 miles through the swamp’s rich tapestry of evergreen shrub bogs, pine forests, wet prairies, and majestic cypress and loblolly bay stands.

Accommodations vary by trail, with campsites located either on secluded islands or wooden platforms—each equipped with a roofed shelter and an enclosed porta-potty.

Only our most experienced naturalists lead these excursions. Along the way, they share insights into the swamp’s cultural and ecological history, help identify plants and wildlife, recount colorful swamp lore, and encourage moments of quiet to fully appreciate the sounds of the wild.

Please note: A separate Refuge permit fee applies, and additional charges may be incurred for shuttle service, if needed.

Reservations and Group Info
Permits may be reserved up to two months in advance to the day of the trip. For example, if you’d like to depart on April 15, we can reserve your trail starting February 15. Some trails book quickly, so we recommend contacting us at least two months and a few weeks ahead for the best chance of securing your preferred dates.

Once we secure a permit, the trip will be opened to other participants. Group sizes are kept small for a more personal, immersive experience.
If you’d prefer a private trip, this can be arranged for an additional fee based on group size and season. This request must be made when you first contact us.

Seasonal Highlights
The Okefenokee offers something special in every season:
Fall brings mild weather, vibrant flowers, and fewer bugs—an ideal time to explore.
Winter is prime for viewing migratory sandhill cranes and other wading birds. Their calls echoing across the swamp is truly a wonder. (Cranes are typically present from late November to early February.)
Spring is breathtaking, but high permit demand in March and April can make bookings more competitive—plan early!
Summer (mid-May through August) is not recommended due to high heat and biting insects.
