Wings Over The Sahtu tells the story of pioneer aviation’s earliest days in Canada’s awesome Western Arctic. Gutsy bush pilots and skilled mechanics, fearless in the face of brutal weather and daunting isolation, proved over 100 years ago that aircraft would be essential to tapping the North’s vast potential.
North-Wright Air’s founder, Warren Wright, and his family are charting their own 50-year history, growing that pioneer legacy with the Sahtu’s progressive indigenous communities, exploration companies, and the canoe and trophy-hunting adventurers who dare to experience the memory of a lifetime.
This handsome 92-page hardcover book, in 8 ½ x 11 coffee-table format, is richly illustrated with archival and recent photography. It reveals the dawn of arctic aviation from 1921, when Imperial Oil sent the first-ever aircraft into the North, chasing the discovery of the Norman Wells oilfield. It captures the adventures of Perry and Phylis Linton, who started Nahanni Air Services, which later became North-Wright Air. The book profiles the eight communities served by North-Wright, along with the remarkable hunting and canoeing attractions of the region.
Wings Over The Sahtu was written, photographed, and produced by Bill Braden, a Yellowknife freelance writer/photographer who authored five other books on Northern industry and attractions. The book also features exceptional photography by Norman Wells multi-media professional Josh Ferguson.
Other Buy Options
- Any independent or major chain bookstore with connections to Ingram Publishing can order it for you. Just supply TITLE and ISBN number (978-1-0689673-0-6).

The retail cost remains the same $45. The cost of shipping is set by the printer, depending on the address; in Canada, under $30. These are Canadian prices; you will be asked to pay in USD, which will automatically be converted to CAD by your credit card provider. Anticipate delivery in about a month. We’re sorry—this option does not provide shipping to Canada’s northern territories due to excessive courier costs. Mailing to any province—or just about anywhere else in the world—is no problem. We’re working on solving this!
