NLCSA's Regional Safety Committees!

The NLCSA is looking for construction industry representatives  to help:

  1. Identify and address regional health and safety issues across the province; and
  2. Support and organize health and safety initiatives in your area.

The NLCSA's Regional Safety Committees (RSCs) help us stay connected with our members across Newfoundland and Labrador. Currently, there are three committees in different regions: Avalon, Central, Western.  We are also working on establishing a committee in Labrador.

Being part of an RSC has lots of perks. Members act as community ambassadors for the NLCSA and the construction health and safety industry. Each committee includes safety leaders from across the industry, representatives from the NLCSA, WorkplaceNL and the OHS Division of Digital Government and Service NL, and other industry stakeholders.  The focus of these committees is on emerging issues, risk reduction, compliance, and the promotion of health and safety. This teamwork improves communication, makes it easier to solve problems, and helps make the construction industry safer and more efficient.

Each committee has an elected Chair and use a terms of reference which includes roles & responsibilities, and how to conduct committee business. This terms of reference helps keep everything consistent, even when committee chairs change.

"These Regional Safety Committees will be a great way for us to better understand diverse perspectives, develop tailored resources, and improve the communication of safety information across the province" says Cherie Whelan, NLCSA CEO. "I was part of a Regional Safety Committee in Fort McMurray, Alberta with the ACSA (Alberta Construction Safety Association) when I lived there. It was such an effective platform for the construction industry to address, share, and learn from safety issues raised at the meetings. I'm looking forward to having a similar collaborative network of dedicated construction representatives. Having Regional Safety Committees will help to ensure that NLCSA resources and offerings are inclusive, effective, and reflective of the needs and concerns of the entire province."

What does a typical meeting look like?

Each meeting is held in person quarterly (every 3 months) at our offices within each region – with the option to attend virtually. A typical agenda includes:

  • Best Practice Spotlight by one of our members or associates
  • Updates from the NLCSA, OHS Division of Digital Government & Service NL and WorkplaceNL by representatives from each organization
  • Round Table Discussion on Health and Safety Trends and Barriers with a focus on Collaborative Solutions to Reduce Risk and Raise Awareness
  • Health and Safety Advocacy & Community Events
  • and much more!

Agenda items and discussions are led by you.  We simply schedule the meetings, send out the agenda, track action items that are brought up, and provide updates as they are completed, but it is your committee – not ours!

What's in it for you?

Expand on your health and safety knowledge by listening to others perspectives from an array of disciplines within the health and safety profession, Connect with and get to know new professionals who can offer expert advice if needed, become a direct contributing member regarding the health and safety initiatives taking place in your community, take away new ideas to improve your own company policies/practices, engage with industry leaders in the health and safety sector and so much more! We are here to help build change and we are dedicated to supporting our Regional Safety Committee members in achieving their goals! Don't miss out, making a positive impact in your community, is just a phone call away!
