DIRECTOR
Rajesh Menon, USTAR Professor
Rajesh Menon combines his expertise in nanofabrication, computation and optical engineering to impact myriad fields including super-resolution lithography, metamaterials, broadband diffractive optics, integrated photonics, photovoltaics and computational optics. His research has spawned over 150 publications, over 40 patents, and 4 spin-off companies. Rajesh is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, and a Fellow of the SPIE, and a Senior Member of the IEEE. Among his other honors are a NASA Early Stage Innovations Award, NSF CAREER Award and the International Commission for Optics Prize. He currently directs the Laboratory for Optical Nanotechnologies (http://lons.utah.edu/) at the University of Utah. He received S.M. and Ph.D. degrees from MIT. Email: rmenon[at]eng.utah.edu.
Apratim Majumdar, Research Assistant Professor web
Apratim Majumder received his PhD in ECE from the University of Utah in 2016. His research interests include developing flat diffractive optics, hyperspectral imaging systems, metamaterial based Si nanophotonic devices and super-resolution nanolithography. He has co-authored 22 journal publications with over 450 citations. Apratim recently received the COE Seed Grant to develop tunable flat optics.

Tina Hayward
Tina Hayward graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, and is currently pursuing her M.S. in Electrical Engineering. She joined Menon Group in Fall, 2021, and is currently working to experimentally demonstrate a very long-range non-diffraction beam. Dajun Lin

Dajun Lin received his master degree in Optical Engineering from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology in 2021. He worked in Institute of Photonic Chips led by Min Gu between 2019 and 2022 and focused on diffractive optical networks and orbital angular momentum holography. He joined Menon Group in 2022 and he is currently working on inverse design for diffractive lens, Meta-mask and holography. Al Ingold
Alexander Ingold graduated from the University of Utah with an Honors Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering. He worked as an Undergraduate Researcher in Dr. Alessandra Angelucci’s visual neuroscience lab for three years. He worked as a histologist and microscopist in projects including the in-vivo validation of the Utah Optrode Array, and the characterization and validation of novel viruses targeting inhibitory neurons. He is currently a PhD student in Dr. Rajesh Menon’s lab. He is working on a Department of Energy grant researching computational cannula based microscopy for observing the lignification of cells in the cambium of poplar trees. al.ingold0[at]gmail.com

Lance Delos Reyes
Lance Delos Reyes is a senior in the electrical engineering program at the University of Utah. He is currently supported by the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) to build a low cost Near-Infrared Vein Imaging system. He has experience working for ARUP labs as a process technician at the University of Utah hospital clinical labs. Anton Pollack

Anton Pollak is an engineering student from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. He is visiting the University of Utah for a research internship as part of the RISE program by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). He is carrying out a project on reconstructing foggy images using machine learning.
Emma Wadsworth
Emma Wadsworth is an undergraduate researcher working towards a degree in computer engineering. Their research is focused on deep learning for computer vision with thermal cameras. Ruipeng Guo is currently a PHD student in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Utah. He got his M.Sc in Physics from Nankai University. Ekata Mitra joined as a Ph.D student in ECE department at the University of Utah in Fall 2020. She received her M.Tech degree in Communication Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur in India (2017). She is currently working on computational microscopy of deep-brain imaging. Her interest lies in deep learning, image processing and medical imaging. Monjurul Meem (currently at Intel)
Monjurul Meem is currently a PHD student in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Utah. He got his B.Sc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. Monjurul joined Menon group in fall 2016. He is currently working on design, fabrication and characterization of diffractive optical devices such as flat lens and 2D/3D holograms. Jason Martineau
Jason’s current research is in super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, specifically in improving the temporal and spatial resolution of the stochastic super resolution techniques (PALM, STORM). More broadly, he is interested in developing methods that will allow scientists to probe not just the spatial structure of cells and organelles at the smallest levels, but also measure other physical observables that can be used to characterize living systems. This include developing force and EM field sensing techniques that are sufficiently noninvasive and that can operate with high enough precision so as to be used in living cells. jtmartineau.work [at] gmail.com.

Alex Hamrick is a junior pursuing a degree in computer science at the University of Utah. His research interests are in algorithms, machine learning, and nanophotonics. He is currently working to use machine learning techniques to create smaller, more efficient nanophotonic devices. Alex enjoys chess, spikeball, and the outdoors.
Zhimeng Pan
Zhimeng Pan is a Ph.D. student of School of Computing of University of Utah since 2017. Before joining Utah, he obtained his B.S. in Macromolecule Physics in University of Science and Technology of China, doing research on computational bio-physics. He is currently working on computational microscopy of deep-brain imaging. His broad research interests include machining learning, data mining and medical imaging. Kazumasa Miyagawa
Kazumasa Miyagawa is a visiting researcher from Japan Patent Office. Kazumasa has worked as a patent examiner since he graduated the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Engineering in 2009. Kazumasa joined Menon group in summer 2018. His interest is applying computational electromagnetics to create ultra-compact, multi-functional nanophotonics-based devices. And he started to research about super-resolution lithography based upon self-assembled nano-structures also. Dainger Adams is an undergraduate researcher pursuing a degree in mathmatics with an emphasis in statistics. His current research is switching the current cpu based software to a gpu focused version, this is to improve the speed of photonic simulations.
Arda Sener
Arda Sener is a student at the Georg-Simon-Ohm Hochschule in Nuremberg, Germany. He is performing an internship in the Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Utah for 2 months funded by RISE DaaD. Arda is doing research on thin lens cameras and also programming in the field of optics.
