Engineering Scholars Program (ESP)

Welcome to the incoming cohort of Fall 2024 Engineering Scholars! Please find information regarding undergraduate research at the U here. We will host a social for you to meet your peers, faculty, and staff on Monday, Aug. 19, from 5 to 6pm in MEB 2109. Please RSVP using the link sent via email.

Scholar Responsibilities:

  • Assist in senior or similar research project (Fall & Spring semesters).
  • Present research at ECE technical open house (in April).
  • Present to your alma-mater about research in ECE @ the U (Fall semester).
  • Participate in lab and related tours (both semesters, optional).

  • Optionally attend AT LEAST TWO Undergraduate Research Education Series events.
  • Read and respond to correspondence from the  project lead and ECE ESP representatives in a timely manner.
  • Conduct the research project under the supervision of the project lead or faculty mentor.
  • If required, obtain and maintain certifications as needed for human subject research, animal research, laboratory and other environmental health, HIPAA, etc.
  • Acknowledge support from the College of Engineering in the dissemination of the research.
  • Be familiar with and follow the University of Utah’s policies on academic conduct. For more information on academic conduct at the University of Utah, see the Student Conduct Code.
  • Devise a schedule with your project lead (or mentor) to ensure you contribute meaningfully to the research project. 

Mentor / Project Lead Responsibilities:

  • Mentor the student in conducting the research. Mentors are asked to pursue at least three specific mentoring activities or strategies including periodic meetings, feedback on presentations, feedback on reports, etc.
  • Ensure that the student is appropriately certified as needed for Human Subject Research, Animal Research, Laboratory and other Environmental Health, HIPAA, etc.
  • Acknowledge support from the College of Engineering in the dissemination of the research.
  • Devise a schedule with the scholar to ensure they contribute meaningfully to the research project.

  • Webinar today, Nov. 7 at 6pm by Suyeon Choi of Stanford titled “Neural Holography for Next-generation Virtual and Augmented Reality Displays” on zoom.
  • Please reach out to Jon Davies for help to obtain your summer internships now. He has kindly agreed to help you all find great internships.
  • COSM Experience Center Field Trip on Friday, December 1st from 10:30am-1:15pm. Please RSVP to Erin Lucy. Bus transportation will be provided, but you need to RSVP.
  • Information session by Pacificorp (useful for your summer internships!) Monday, Oct. 23 11:30am-1:30pm in WEB Eccles Boardroom. Lunch provided. RSVP here.
  • Field trip to Texas Instruments: Friday, November 3 from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM. The bus will leave at 12:00 PM from the front of WEB. The tour is capped at 50 students. Students will be required to sign-up for the tour via Acuity as there are a few security questions that students need to answer (required by TI). Here is the link 
  • Attend the STEM internship & career fair. Tuesday, September 26, 2023 | 9 am – 3 pm, A. Ray Olpin Student Union. This is required for you to acquire a summer internship. Register here.
  • Dissect a cellphone event: Thursday 9/7 from 145-3 in MEB 3265 (the Analog Lab) run by Prof. Cindy Furse (class canvas link).
  • Welcome reception for the 2023 ESP cohort on Monday, Aug. 21 at 6pm in MEB 2109.
  • If you are a John and Marcia Price College of Engineering Engineering (COE) Scholar, please join the slack group by clicking here.
  • You are required to attend the COE ESP orientation on Aug. 25, 3:30-5pm, location TBD.
  • All scholars meeting the responsibilities listed below will receive a $200 book credit (thanks to the COE!).
