Expertise is in our DNA
Formed in 1998, Manual Therapy International PS, PLLC (MTI Physical Therapy) is locally owned by two practicing physical therapists. Disenchanted by the corporatization and high volume-based approach of American health care, MTI forged a new patient care model based on low volume, leading-edge clinical skill and clinical training. Inspired through clinical mentoring and education, including subsequent certification from the Nordic Group of Specialists in Manual Therapy, Jim Rivard, Scott Olson, and Brian Power established a practice model to emulate a Scandinavian style of care that has since become the leading evidence-based approach to orthopedic manual physical and sports therapy. Pioneering the 1:1 model of care, all MTI clinics schedule 45-minute patient visits entirely with a highly trained physical therapist. We have elected to avoid the industry standard of scheduling 2 or more patients per patient visit block, as well as avoiding the utilization of athletic trainers and physical therapy assistants/aides, to deliver patient care. The greatest compliment, over 25 years later, is to see this model duplicated in other clinical practices across the country and around the world.
Teaching is in our Blood
MTI formed a teaching partnership with Ola Grimsby and The Ola Grimsby Institute (an international post-graduate educational consortium), to provide a clinical training center for the education and mentoring of post-graduate physical therapists to advance their clinical skills in orthopedic manual therapy (OMT). This includes a full-time orthopedic residency program and a manual therapy fellowship program. In 2020, MTI established their own Sports Residency program with accreditation through the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE), the recognized accrediting body of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). We are proud to see our graduates complete all testing requirements for Board Certification in Sports Physical Therapy. With over 150 graduates and counting, MTI is proud to say we have trained the largest number of Residents and Fellows than any company in Washington state!
The current MTI staff is continually involved with teaching local programs and courses, as well as seminars and conferences nationally and in over 15 countries worldwide. Staff development includes sponsoring educational seminars from the OGI, Blood Flow Restriction training through Owens Recovery Science, and courses in Emergency Response for The Athletes through Cogent Steps. By hiring motivated physical therapists and providing them with the best post-graduate training, MTI has created the optimal clinical environment for patient care.
Our practice style continues to evolve through the latest research evidence, course work, and our clinical mentoring of other physical therapists. As you work with your personal physical therapist, you will recognize the difference between MTI’s approach and your practitioner’s clinical skill and knowledge. We know that your experience with MTI will be unique and allow you to meet your individual goals.
