FAQs about Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine:

Following the intake, patients are asked to put on a gown to be worn during the acupuncture treatment. If you feel that this would be uncomfortable, you are encouraged to wear loose fitting clothing so that the points can be easily accessed. Short pants and a short sleeve shirt are most ideal in this situation.

Do not arrive with an empty stomach. Try to have a small snack or meal before arriving for a treatment. Treatments received while hungry or on an empty stomach can cause you to feel dizzy during the treatment.

A first office visit will generally last between 60 to 90 minutes.

Return acupuncture visits generally last for approximately one hour. Return dermatology visits generally last for approximately 30 minutes.

Upon insertion one may feel a mild pinch or nothing at all.

After insertion, the needles will be manipulated to bring on a Qi sensation. This can be perceived as a deep ache, a distending sensation, warmth and/or a feeling of movement at the point of insertion. All these sensations are characteristic of the Qi sensation.

Needles are left in for 10-45 minutes depending on the ailment being treated and or the age of the patient.

Generally, no. However, the points stimulated during the treatment can be felt after removal of the needles. This is a common reaction and will subside with time. Very occasionally, a bruise may form at the site of insertion. This is nothing to worry about. Applying pressure to the site will help minimize bruising.

Chinese Herbal Medicine encompasses the use of Traditional Chinese herbs in the form of teas and tablets. These teas are a blend of numerous herbs that are chosen in accordance to your individual Chinese diagnosis.

Please do not wear makeup to your dermatology appointment so that all aspects of your skin can be assessed thoroughly. 

No, the herbs are prepared in-house and vacuum sealed into individual sachets that are ready for consumption.  This helps increase compliance while at home or traveling.

It is helpful to bring a list of your health concerns, and any supplements or medications that you are currently taking. In addition if you have had any recent lab work or imaging it is always helpful to bring copies of your reports.

Yes, tests to assess your health can be ordered by your naturopathic physician.

Both standard and specialty blood tests, stool tests, urine tests, and saliva tests may be utilized.  In addition, Papsmears and cultures of specimens collected from the throat, vagina, or other areas of the body may be ordered when appropriate. Referrals to get images such as x-rays, ultrasounds, MRI, CT scans, mammograms, DEXA scans, etc may be made when needed.
