The Road to Innovation
Mission Bach
Our Story
Celebrating music’s ability to inspire & unite
The Vision
Most of these concerts and events are free and open to the public, designed to reach a wide audience. The goal is to make music accessible and engaging for all, fostering a deeper appreciation for both Bach’s works and contemporary classical music.
The Performances
Adding yet another layer to the audience's experience is the fact that each performance will be held at or near one of California’s historic missions, providing a stunning and historically significant backdrop for the music.
The California Missions, built between 1769 and 1823, are some of the most iconic structures in the state. The first was built in 1769 (just 19 years after Bach’s death) while the last was built in 1823 (one year before the first edition of Bach’s Cello Suites was published). These Missions provide not only a picturesque setting but also a deep connection to California’s cultural and historical heritage. Each venue will enhance the listening experience, combining music with the historical ambiance of the missions.
Workshops and other events will be held at or near many of the Missions.
The Composers
Jennifer Kloetzel has commissioned six diverse composers to create new works for solo cello, each inspired by one of Bach’s suites. These composers include:
These talented composers bring a range of backgrounds and perspectives, ensuring a rich and varied addition to the cello repertoire.
Educational and Outreach Programs
In addition to the performances, Mission: Bach includes educational workshops and outreach programs aimed at engaging the local communities. These sessions explore the historical and musical significance of Bach’s suites and the new compositions, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of music.
