winter’s breath is heavy
frosting windows
sending feathered friends
to the feeder

black-capped chickadee
sweeps in, stealing one seed
oblivious to flurry of finches

I am warm, cocooning
in hibernaculum
molten layers
of meditation

juncos in tuxedos
bounce over snow crust
bringing me giggles

  2. Birds in winter do bring on the giggles, Mish. We have a woodpecker and a jay that visit our feeder, as well as the usual robins and finches. I love the personification of winter with its heavy breath frosting windows.

  4. “molten layers of meditation” sound good to me. I like the pics you share here. What would those tiny feathered beings do without us? (They would survive, but we like to imagine they need us.) Good prompt and good poem, Mish.

  7. You have described my situation here in NC as well. The arctic blast came through overnight with temps in the teens. The birds have been active all day at the feeder. I enjoyed your beautiful quadrille, Mish.

  8. “Winter’s breath is heavy.” – I relate to this. The feeling of winter goes beyond the temperature. The mood can be heavy. Thank goodness for the birds through our windows. Thank goodness for my electric lap blanket.

    Wishing you wellness and peace.
