Your Hub for Brain Injury Support in Colorado
Brain injury changes everything, but you don’t have to navigate what comes next alone. MINDSOURCE is Colorado’s lead state agency on brain injury, operating under the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS). We can connect you to the resources, support and community you need and deserve.
Who We Are: Colorado's Brain Injury Network
Brain injury remains one of the most underdiagnosed, under-reported health challenges in Colorado. At MINDSOURCE, we are committed to changing that. Through awareness, education and research, we want to make sure no one navigates the rehabilitation journey alone.
MINDSOURCE Brain Injury Network is Colorado’s designated lead state agency on brain injury, operating under the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS). We serve three interconnected roles: Lead State Agency on brain injury, administrator of the Colorado Brain Injury Trust Fund Board and coordinator of the Colorado Advisory Council on Brain Injuries.
Our Mission and Vision
We connect survivors, caregivers, family members and professionals to the right resources. We spread awareness about brain injury rehabilitation across the lifespan by funding community and research grants, delivering training and technical assistance for professionals and strengthening brain injury policy and systems across Colorado. For direct support services, we partner closely with the Brain Injury Association of Colorado (BIAC).
Our Mission
To lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive, coordinated system of up-to-date research, services and accessible funding for survivors and their families, helping increase awareness of and lessen stigma around brain injury.
Our Vision
To advocate for a future in Colorado where anyone living with, or affected by, brain injury has access to the person-centered care and quality of life they deserve, with independence and choice in their rehabilitation journey.
Understanding Brain Injury
Brain injury can happen to anyone at any age — from a fall, car accident or sports injury, to a stroke, aneurysm or other event. Yet, many people don’t seek support until seven to 12 years after their injury. No two brain injuries are alike, and the impact can vary widely.

Think You or Someone You Know May Have a Brain Injury?
MINDSOURCE can help! We offer the Online Brain Injury Screening and Support System (OBISSS) — a free, confidential screening tool available to anyone in Colorado age 13 and older. OBISSS helps uncover a possible history of brain injury and provides personalized tips and strategies for managing symptoms.
Anyone can complete the screening on their own or with the support of a professional.

Voices From Our Community
Brain injury looks different for every person who lives with it. These are the voices of Coloradans who have been there: survivors, family members and caregivers navigating life with brain injury. Their experiences shape everything we do.

Living with a brain injury is like driving in the fog relentlessly. Finding community saved my life. Community support is important. Together is stronger.Nadine
After my daughter’s sports concussion, she was unable to go to school, lost friends, and had constant head pain. Getting help put her on a path towards healing.Maria
I am a person living with a brain injury. To me it’s not just one month, it’s 12 months, every day. I wish everyone understood that brain injury is lifelong and resilience is very important.I am a person living with a brain injury. The testimonials I chose were “Why do I support Brain Injury Awareness Month?” and “What is one thing you wish everyone knew about the brain injury community?” I chose these because to me it’s not just one month, it’s 12 months, every day.
I wish everyone understood that brain injury is lifelong and resilience is very important. What matters most to me is helping people remain independent with the right strategies and supporting them in continuing that independence. What makes people resilient is finding ways to move through depression and reconnect with their community by building meaningful relationships. I never want anyone to feel stuck or alone.

My experience with having a brain injury has brought me to a place in life where now I’m able to pass along what I’ve learned and look at life in a way that appreciates people for what is unique about them.My experience with having a brain injury has brought me to a place in life where now I’m able to pass along what I’ve learned and look at life in a way that appreciates people for what is unique about them and the fact that what’s different about us that makes us strong together, and to look at life with a strength-based approach.
To everything I do, where it’s what’s unique about us that’s celebrated. I don’t want to be fixed or cured or rehabilitated. I want to have the tools and resources I need to work in partnership with others to live life to the fullest.

I love my brain injury. It has taught me a lot about myself and allowed me to accept my vulnerability. I would not take it away because I have met some wonderful people.I love my brain injury. It has taught me a lot about myself and allowed me to accept my vulnerability. One thing I realize, a word to describe me is fluid, and I have to say being fluid is the biggest piece to anybody’s life. And I feel like everybody gets to be a puzzle piece to your life in some way, shape, or form.
I love my brain injury. I would not take it away because I have met some wonderful people that are for me, and I hear things a lot differently now. I have to say that every day is wonderful. I get to learn you, and you get to learn me every single day. I love that. That’s the best part about my brain injury.
And I will tell anyone in the world we are here for you, and we care about you, and we love you. Don’t worry about it. Don’t go back, today is a new day.

Having a brain injury is devastating. I never knew how complicated the symptoms were, because no two patients are alike. The truth is, I wouldn’t want to go back to my old self.Having a brain injury is devastating. I never knew how complicated the symptoms were, because no two patients are alike, or how difficult it is for those around you to understand the silent battles you are facing, because they cannot physically see them.
I felt ashamed that I couldn’t recover at the pace that people hoped I would, that I was going through horrible depression because I didn’t recognize myself… I had to learn to let go of the control and trust the process, and I learned to be open to treatments I had previously pushed back on…
The truth is, I wouldn’t want to go back to my old self. My injury has allowed me to prioritize my life in a way that I am proud of and to find compassion for others in ways I could have never imagined before this injury.
