mGBA is a free and open source Game Boy Advance emulator, thanks to which you can play virtually any title of this legendary Nintendo portable, regardless of the power of your Mac. Since its conception in 2013, the goal of the project was always to offer a good emulation experience even on less powerful hardware. And it has succeeded. Any Mac with system assembled in 2009 onwards will be able to run it without any problems.

Getting started with mGBA is very easy. Although you will find dozens of different configuration options with which to customize your gaming experience, the reality is that you don't need to configure anything to load a ROM and start playing. The emulator requires no additional BIOS and is fully compatible with all .gba, .gb, .gc, and virtually any other compressed file. Regardless of the format in which you have the ROMs, you will be able to run them quickly, without the need to go through any complicated processes.

Although it is not necessary to enter the configuration menu to get the most out of mGBA, it is highly recommended. From here, you can adjust the frames per second or the resolution; you can also apply experimental filters to the game's image or change the interface language. Of course, you'll also be able to set up the controls. By default, the keyboard arrow keys correspond to the console's D-pad, while the Z and X keys correspond to the B and A buttons, respectively. But if you don't like this configuration, you can always change it. You can even connect an Xbox controller or any other gamepad.

mGBA's compatibility list is extensive, with over a thousand Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color and Game Boy titles 100% compatible. Best of all? Most Game Boy Advance peripherals are also compatible with this emulator. Rumble, the Game Boy Printer, the Game Boy Camera, and the Solar Sensor are just some of the peripherals you can easily emulate. Basically, you can have the same experience on your Mac that you would get on your traditional handheld console.

As is often the case, mGBA doesn't facilitate the download of ROMs. If you want to play any original Game Boy Advance release or any other handheld, it's best to dump your own cartridge image onto the Mac, and load it directly to the emulator. That said, there are also tons of totally free video games that you can easily download and run on the emulator. Many developers offer these ROMs for free on their official websites or in dedicated repositories.
