Colloquia and Seminars

The math department regularly hosts colloquia and seminars. The colloquia are usually scheduled on Tuesday and are aimed at the general mathematics audience, and the seminars are scheduled based on the areas of specialization: Algebra & Topology on Wednesday, Applied Mathematics on Friday, and Analysis on Wednesday.
Visit our events calendar to find out about upcoming colloquia and seminars.
Conferences
The math department has been sponsoring conferences and workshops organized or co-organized by our faculty.
- 2026 Alabama Summer Undergraduate Math Workshop, June 8-11, 2026 at The University of Alabama
- SEC Geometry-Topology Workshop 2025, May 9-11, 2025 at The University of Alabama
- Workshop on theoretical and numerical challenges in the mathematical aspects of materials science, August 12-15, 2024 at The University of Alabama
- University of Alabama Focused Research Group in Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry, March 20-24, 2024 at The University of Alabama. Funded travel expenses of Hanlin Cai (Columbia University), Linquan Ma (Purdue University), Karl Schwede (University of Utah), Kevin Tucker (Universiy of Illinois at Chicago). The focused research group worked through the details of a circulated preprint by Thomas Polstra, Zariski-Nagata Theorems for Singularities and the Uniform Izumi-Rees Property, exploring new approaches to the conjecture on the finite generation of symbolic blowups for varieties with strongly F-regular singularities in prime characteristic. Highlights of the group’s activities included the identification of errors in a widely cited publication and the development of a new direction toward resolving the finite generation conjecture. Additional outcomes included the initiation of collaborative research among PhD students at the University of Alabama.
