THE MATRIX
"The Matrix" is a metaphor for an artificially created reality, and when we look at today's society, which is a reality based on laws - measures - commerce, etc., as opposed to the instinctual basics of shelter - hunt - gather - procreate, we can see the modern world for the artifice it is, especially when you realize upon closer examination that those instinctual basics are still the fuel in society's engine, but an artificial overlay has been placed on top of them to allow greater control.
In the movie, it is revealed that the people who are plugged into The Matrix are nothing more than "batteries" used to power the great artificial creation, and that metaphor holds true when you look at today's society, and understand that it runs off of the willing participation of those who are enslaved by it, and that at the moment one of those slave/batteries becomes weak, it is quickly discarded and replaced by a fresh new one.
The batteries feed the brain, but they do not have the perspective of the brain that controls The Matrix, so the batteries exist within their own very limited perspective, just as the myopic people we constantly encounter do, and because their vision/understanding is so severely limited, they are unable to grasp the magnitude and purpose of The Matrix.
But here is where things become problematic for the dogmatic moralists who see The Matrix as "evil"...
All systems are based on input and output... Eating and pooping, sex and birth, learning and teaching, planting and harvesting, work and reward, and so on... You can look at a beautiful picture of a loving mother breastfeeding her baby, and after you've wiped the sentimental tear from your eye, you can see the mother as a slave/battery feeding another drone to be placed into the service of The Matrix, and realize that the scene before you is neither good nor evil, it is simply a necessity to keep the system functioning.
Those who are OUTSIDE of the system subsist in constant fear of, and combat with, the natural world, in a relentless struggle to survive against the elements, thirst, starvation, beasts, bugs, boils, bacteria, and biology; never truly relaxing and enjoying themselves; never engaging in philosophy and higher thought; never expanding beyond their basic best-like existence; forever bored with the monotony of their tortured life.
Those who are contributively INSIDE of the system live in perpetual abundance, having the sum total of human knowledge and experience at their fingertips... Enjoying the benefits of an unlimited smorgasbord of carefree relationships that are just a right-swipe away... Indulging in the food and fineries created by artisans all over the world, delivered to their doorstep... Engaging in fulfilling occupations and study... Living, learning, working, shopping, dining and partying in lavish infrastructures that are unaffected by the climate outside... Never being bored because unlimited and unrestricted entertainment of every indulgence, enticement, enrichment, and perversion is but a click or call away.
Now you look at this comparison, and suddenly see a juxtaposition that is quite familiar to you... The comparison between blissfully living in the New Kingdom, or struggling to survive in the Outer Darkness... Suddenly your perception of The Matrix, and the positions of good and evil given in the movie are reversed, and you're thinking... "Was that the purpose all along? Are The Matrix and other fight-against-the-system movies a filter to make subversive people expose themselves and reject the New Kingdom?"
If that is the question you're starting to ask, then the next question should be... "Could society ever be a utopian paradise with judgmental Christians, countercultural leftists, nihilistic anarchists, special-interest radicals and militant atheists as my neighbors?"... Those are the people who are made the "heroes" in anti-New World Order and fight-against-the-system entertainment, so people who identify with them, gravitate to that way of thinking, and join each other to "bring down The Matrix" they presently see with their very limited perspective.
So in summation... The Matrix is very real, and it is very good for those who are sophisticated, and those who strive to be more than just simple beasts of the field... Conversely, The Matrix is very bad for those who are repulsed by the thought of contributing to the betterment of society, and in so doing, bettering themselves... But The Matrix of today is very analogous to the computer program presented in the movie, in that the program is presently imperfect because it is filled with 'corrupt code', so when the evil people and societal corruptions are finally removed by Lord RayEl, the system will be perfected.
