MY TESTIMONY, APRIL 1966.
“I’m sorry, Dave, but I can’t make it tonight, after all. Something’s cropped up. It was the voice of Ros, my girlfriend, and she was cancelling our date.
“What am I going to do now?” I thought. “I don’t want to just sit around at home on a Saturday night.” But there only seemed one alternative which didn’t really grab me at all, and that was to go to a young people’s church get-together.
My father was the lay-pastor of a local Baptist church and having been brought up to attend church twice on a Sunday, plus the Sunday school, I considered myself a Christian. But now at twenty years of age I reasoned I had better things to do on a Saturday night than to get another dose of religion!
“Oh well,” I sighed, “There doesn’t seem to be anything worth watching on TV, so I may as well go to the meeting.”
So, eight-o’clock came and I knocked on the door of the home where the meeting was being held. Although, looking around, I knew most of the young people who had gathered, I felt a little awkward and out of place, but I didn’t know why.
Two evangelists had been working with the churches in our town and one of them was the speaker at the meeting. We sang a few choruses out of Youth Praise and then there was another knock on the door. And who should walk in but my sister Kate accompanied by none other than Ros, the girlfriend. I later learned that it was Kate who had persuaded Ros to cancel the date hoping and praying that I would turn up to this meeting! Jesus answered their prayer, it worked.
Eventually the evangelist stood up to speak and using the story of David and Goliath as his illustration, he began to speak of a ‘giant of sin’ in our lives. Although I hadn’t done anything really bad and had attended church all my life, I realised, as he spoke, that I too was a sinner and needed to be saved. I didn’t respond publicly that night but when I got home, I sat up in bed and prayed a simple prayer of repentance. I asked Jesus to forgive me all of my sin and to wash me clean with His precious blood, and to come into my heart, and then I added something else: ‘and Lord, please let the Book come alive in my experience. At that moment I knew, that I knew, that Jesus had come into my life. I had so much Joy.
I lay down that night with a greater sense of peace than I had ever known. My life has never been the same since. Since that night, I have had the privilege of sharing this GOOD NEWS in 41 Nations, and led many to Jesus, and seen so many healed and delivered for the Glory of God.
