THE RELIGION OF JESUS VS. THE RELIGION ABOUT JESUS
"What If We've Been Studying Jesus Instead of Following Him β And Mistaken One for the Other?"
THE GREAT IDENTITY CRISIS
The earliest followers of Jesus were never called "Christians" first. Acts 9:2, 19:9, and 24:14 repeatedly identify them as "People of THE WAY" β practitioners of a visible, recognizable lifestyle, not subscribers to a doctrinal system. The term "Christian" (Acts 11:26) was a label given by outsiders in Antioch who saw people acting so much like Jesus they were called "little Christs." The name wasn't earned by theology but by resemblance.
The seismic shift occurred when Christianity moved from being a dangerous movement of radical obedience to an institutional religion of doctrinal compliance. By the 4th century, particularly after the Council of Nicaea (325 AD), we replaced FOLLOWING Jesus with DEFINING Jesus. We replaced the journey with a textbook, discipleship with membership, transformation with information.
This created two religions under one name:
The Religion OF Jesus = The actual way Jesus lived, what He practiced, commanded, demonstrated β and His call for us to do likewise.
The Religion ABOUT Jesus = The theological system built around Jesus that can be fully embraced without ever living as Jesus lived.
The devastating reality: You can be fully immersed in the religion ABOUT Jesus while completely disconnected from the religion OF Jesus. You can preach about Jesus without practicing Jesus, study Him without following Him, defend His deity while denying His demands.
THE INDICTMENT FROM JESUS'S OWN MOUTH
Matthew 7:21-23 contains the most terrifying words Jesus ever spoke. People who called Him "Lord," who prophesied, cast out demons, and did mighty works in His name are rejected with "I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness." These weren't atheists β they had spiritual gifts, ministry track records, and correct confessions. Their problem wasn't doctrinal but behavioral. They performed in His name but never practiced His way.
Jesus draws the line with one word: "DOES." Not "understands" or "believes" the Father's will, but "DOES" it (Matthew 7:21). The Greek poieΕ implies ongoing, habitual, lifestyle execution.
James 2:19 demolishes belief without behavior: "Even the demons believe β and shudder!" The demons have impeccable theology; they believe every correct thing about Jesus and are still demons. Belief does not equal belonging. James 2:26 is clear: "Faith apart from works is dead" β not weak, not immature, but corpse-faith with no spiritual pulse.
Matthew 7:24-27 β The parable of two builders reveals that both men HEARD Jesus's words. The only difference was whether they DID them. The storm doesn't test your knowledge; it tests your obedience. The religion ABOUT Jesus crumbles like sand when tested because it was never built on the rock of OBEDIENCE.
WHAT JESUS ACTUALLY COMMANDED (And What We've Ignored)
The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) commands us to "teach them to OBSERVE (Greek: tΔreΕ β to guard, keep, practice) ALL that I have COMMANDED you." Not teach them ABOUT Me, but teach them to OBEY Me.
Jesus commanded:
Love enemies and pray for persecutors (Matthew 5:44)
Turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39)
Give to those who beg (Matthew 5:42)
Give in secret (Matthew 6:3)
Don't store up earthly treasures (Matthew 6:19)
Don't be anxious (Matthew 6:25)
Judge not (Matthew 7:1)
Deny yourself, take up your cross daily (Matthew 16:24)
Become a servant to be great (Matthew 20:26)
Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and imprisoned (Matthew 25:35-36)
Matthew 25:31-46 β The final judgment separates sheep from goats NOT by theology but by deeds: Did you feed, give drink, welcome, clothe, visit? Both groups are surprised. The righteous served naturally; the condemned were so absorbed in religious activity they missed Jesus disguised as "the least of these."
Matthew 23 β Jesus reserves His harshest condemnations not for sinners but for religious experts. Seven times He calls them "HYPOCRITES" (Greek: hypokritΔs β actors wearing masks). Verse 23: "You have neglected the WEIGHTIER MATTERS of the law: JUSTICE, MERCY, and FAITHFULNESS" while obsessing over minor details. We tithe our spice racks while the world starves for justice.
JESUS'S PRIMARY INVITATION: "FOLLOW ME"
Jesus's repeated call throughout the Gospels (Matthew 4:19, 9:9, 16:24; John 1:43, 10:27, 21:19) was "FOLLOW ME" β not "believe correct things about Me." Akolouthei moi means "walk behind me, go where I go, do what I do." In rabbinical tradition, disciples walked so close behind their rabbi they were "covered in the dust" of the rabbi's feet.
1 John 2:6: "Whoever says he abides in him ought to WALK in the same way in which He walked."
1 Peter 2:21: Jesus left us an EXAMPLE (Greek: hupogrammon β a writing copy for children to trace) "so that you might FOLLOW in His steps."
HOW JESUS ACTUALLY LIVED
PRAYER β Mark 1:35, Luke 5:16, 6:12: Jesus prayed constantly, desperately, all night. Prayer was the breath of His relationship with the Father.
COMPASSION β Matthew 9:36, 14:14, 15:32; Mark 1:41: Splanchnizomai (moved in one's bowels) β visceral response that always resulted in action: healing, feeding, touching lepers.
JUSTICE β John 2:14-16: He made a whip and drove out money changers. Luke 4:18-19: His mission was "good news to the poor, liberty to captives, sight to the blind, freedom for the oppressed." He publicly confronted systems that crushed the vulnerable.
SERVICE β John 13:3-5, 14-15: Knowing He had all authority, Jesus washed feet β including Judas's and Peter's β then commanded: "DO as I have done." Mark 10:45: "The Son of Man came not to be served but to SERVE."
TABLE FELLOWSHIP β Luke 5:29-30, 15:1-2; Matthew 11:19: Jesus ate with tax collectors, sinners, prostitutes, lepers β declaring solidarity with those the religious establishment rejected. The table was sacred space; the meal itself became transformation.
THE COST OF FOLLOWING
Luke 14:26-27, 33 β Three times Jesus says "CANNOT be my disciple" unless you hate (by comparison) family, bear your cross, and renounce all possessions. Jesus made following Him harder, not easier.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer: "Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross. Costly grace is following Jesus Christ." The modern church drowns in cheap grace while starving for costly discipleship.
THE WATCHING WORLD'S VERDICT
Gandhi: "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." Barna Research shows non-Christians perceive Christians as: hypocritical, judgmental, anti-homosexual, too political, sheltered.
Romans 2:24: "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles BECAUSE OF YOU." The world doesn't read the Bible β they read US. And they're rejecting our version of Jesus because it bears no resemblance to the radical revolutionary from Galilee.
THE FRUIT TEST (Matthew 7:15-20) β We're known by FRUITS, not beliefs. Galatians 5:22-23 lists: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Does the modern church exhibit these? Or anxiety, division, harshness, and culture war?
THE CALL BACK TO THE WAY
Revelation 2:4-5 β To the doctrinally sound church at Ephesus: "You have abandoned your first love. REPENT and DO the works you did at first."
What returning requires:
FROM information TO transformation
FROM attendance TO obedience (James 1:22)
FROM exclusion TO inclusion (Luke 14:12-14)
FROM judgment TO mercy (Matthew 9:13)
FROM institutional loyalty TO Kingdom living
FROM performance TO authenticity
FROM fear TO love (1 John 4:18)
FROM protecting power TO washing feet
Daily audit: Did I love sacrificially? Serve without repayment? Share resources? Forgive enemies? Notice the invisible? Pray desperately? Confront injustice? Take up my cross? Would a camera show Jesus or just religion?
THE FINAL PLEA
Micah 6:8: "What does the LORD require? DO justice, LOVE mercy, WALK humbly with your God." Three things. Not three hundred doctrinal points.
John 13:35: "By this all will know you are my disciples: if you have LOVE for one another." Not correct eschatology or theological arguments β LOVE is the credential, the evidence, the proof.
John 14:6: "I am THE WAY, the truth, and the life." Not the doctrine, system, or institution β THE WAY. A way of living, not thinking. A path to walk, not master. A life to imitate, not a theology to study. A cross to carry, not a creed to confess.
The early church turned the world upside down (Acts 17:6) within 300 years β without political power, military might, or platforms β because they out-loved, out-served, out-sacrificed, and out-died everyone else. They were called THE WAY because their lifestyle was so radically different the only explanation was JESUS WAS ALIVE IN THEM.
DISCUSSION QUESTION
"If someone watched your daily life for a month without hearing you speak β would they know you follow Jesus? What would they actually see?"
2 Corinthians 3:2-3: "You ARE the letter... written not with ink but with the Spirit... on tablets of human hearts." You are the gospel the world reads. What story is your life telling?
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
"Lord Jesus, I repent. I have studied You instead of followed You. I have defended Your name without demonstrating Your nature. Forgive the distance between my confession and conduct. Today I return to THE WAY β not religion, but YOU. Teach me to obey, not just believe. To love, not just confess. To serve, not just sing. Cover me in Your dust, Rabbi. I'm walking close behind You from now on. In Jesus's name, Amen."
