BEFORE YOU SAY “I DO”

Expectations Are Often Idols in Disguise_

Scripture “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” — 1 John 5:21

Teaching
Most premarital expectations are not hopes, they are demands. Demands create idols. Idols create disappointment. Disappointment creates accusation.

What you refuse to surrender becomes what you require from your spouse. That is not covenant; that is idolatry. When the expectation is unmet, the idol punishes the other person.

Before you say “I do,”confront this without self-defense: What do I expect my spouse to give me that God did not command them to provide? If the list is long, marriage will be short.

Reflection
1. What expectations do I treat as rights?

2. Have I mistaken desire for entitlement?

Prayer
Lord, break idols disguised as expectations. Purify my desires.
