1 Corinthians 13:13
And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Faith, hope, and love are presented as fundamental and permanent elements of the Christian experience– far more important than any spiritual gift, but love is the most important because it is the greatest and will continue to exist even when faith becomes sight and hope is fulfilled.

Faith is necessary for our very salvation, the scripture says....

John 3:36
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

God has ordained that Christ has given eternal life to those who believe in Him. He is the only one who can give it and this is the only way by which it is received, through "Faith".

Hope is necessary for our expectation of the future.

Romans 8:24-25
..... but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

This hope means a confident expectation that what God has revealed as coming in the future, will come, that his promises will be fulfilled. It is the other side of faith.

Even though the three are essential, one is greater which is "Love" why?

* Faith takes, love gives, and it is more blessed to give than to receive.
* Faith is like a hand that receives, love is the great thing it receives.
* Hope is similar to faith and expects good for oneself, love seeks the good of others.
* Faith and hope are means to an end, love is the end.
* That which does most for the common good is the greatest and best, and love does this.
* Love is the supreme virtue that underpins and gives meaning to faith and hope.

A Christian life is meant to be characterized by faith, hope, and an ever increasing measure of love.
