Would Dinosaurs Fit On Noah's Ark?
The Size of Noah's Ark
The question is often asked if Noah's Ark was actually big enough to contain all the animals, food, and water that was needed for survival. Although variables exist which can effect the size of the finished Ark, usually it is calculated to be about 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. Henry Morris estimated that the ark would have a carrying capacity of 522 railroad cars which would have plenty of space for animals, food, and Noah's family. To get an idea of what this means, an average railcar can hold about 50 sheep.
The Number of Dinosaur Kinds
It is estimated that only about 50 Kinds of dinosaurs are now known with most of them being small in size. This number might decrease with further research as some of these Kinds are somewhat similar in appearance. This means that a small herd of dinosaur with up to 100 members could possibly have been on the ark. Modern railcars will place about 16 steers (similar to bison) per car with each having a separate stall.
The Size of Dinosaurs
Dinosaur fossils tend to come in either small or large sizes. The medium sized dinosaurs seem to be lacking. If an average were taken, some estimates suggest they would be the size of a large sheep or pony or perhaps as big as an American Bison. A small herd of sheep or bison would not be a problem for an ark of that size.
Noah did not necessarily have to carry adult animals on the Ark, but instead could have carried babies or young animals which would be much smaller. This would have the added benefit that these animals had their entire life ahead of them to reproduce.
For size comparison, the 'Footprint' image in the gallery has my foot next to an Acrocanthosaurus print (similar to a Tyrannosaurus) from the Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, TX. These animals were estimated to reach about 35 feet tall and weigh about 6 tons as adults.
