The covenant of God shifts from law written on stone or the letter of the word to the the Holy Spirit writing his law on our hearts. Hebrews 8:10 (and Hebrews 10:16), which quote Jeremiah 31:33)

The sacrifice of Jesus Christ offers forgiveness, heart transformation, and grace over death and condemnation.

This "better covenant" is based on superior promises. According to the world of God. Hebrews 8:6

Instead of external legal obedience (Ten Commandments), the new covenant gives internal transformation by the Holy Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:6

Trying to keep the law in our own power is being in works. That is trying to gain God's approval through good deeds or good behavior. Ephesians 2:8-10, Titus 3:5, Romans 11:6

No one is good enough under the Mosaic law. One must be absolutely perfect to be approved by a Holy God. Mark 10:18 Romans 3:23

One bad thought will result in eternal death. Matthew 5:28, Mark 7: 20-23,

Adding works to the gospel makes Christ non effective
In our life.
When we do that we fall from grace, and put ourself under the condemnation of the law. Which results in death. Both spiritual eternal death and in death in this life which is condemnation and judgement.
