Judas Iscariot

Who was Judas in the Bible?

The New Testament mentions three men named Judas who played a significant role in Jesus’ time. One of them, Judas Iscariot, who betrayed the Lord for thirty pieces of silver, served as an apostle and later hanged himself.

The name Iscariot is said to have been taken from the name of a small town in Judea called Iscariot, meaning “a man of Iscariot.”

Some scholars have sought an alternative meaning for the name, linking it to a Jewish rebel and murderer named Sicarius.

However, at that time, most Hebrew names had a suffix in their names, such as Matthew the tax collector or Simon the son of Jonah (Matthew 16:17), and Aaron the Levite (Exodus 4:14). Judas Iscariot may also have been associated with the Hebrew word for “Iscariot,” a place or a person who rebelled.

Judas Iscariot's desire to sell and kill Jesus or his desire to accumulate money around him was the reason he was forced to betray the Lord. Which do we agree with?

They argue that the desire for the death of Jesus, whose purpose was to fill his bag with the proceeds of the sale, was determined by a being above his nature, and rather, because his death would snatch Judas' bag from his hand, he could not have thought of it.

However, the evil desire that he could not control opened the door to his destruction. The apostle John testified that he was a thief, which testifies to his love of money.

However, he was called to discipleship and joined the fellowship. He was an excellent apostle and participated in various spiritual services. He served as a financial manager for a long time. The basis and source of his spiritual and natural ministry was the heavenly Father, and it was given and granted to him, not related to his identity.

Judas Iscariot knew that the Pharisees had tried to arrest Jesus many times. However, he did not know that the Pharisees had succeeded. Perhaps Judas was still thinking that the result would be the same, but was motivated by a selfish desire to make the payment himself?

Did Jesus not believe in the prophetic word that had been spoken to him and that he had heard the command from Jesus at the last moment to go quickly and return the thirty denarii that had been given to him at the last minute?

Just as the apostles could not easily understand the death and resurrection of Jesus, so Judas could not have a different understanding from them. However, when the sale was made, he did not abandon all the materialism that he had sold and cherished. It is sad that if we talk about the heart of the Son of Man, it is written for our lesson.
