DeVry Writing Center: Developing and Supporting Arguments (with APA)

The first keyword here is developing. While we often quickly compose and deliver messages, thoughtfully following the writing process leads to more reliably effective messaging. Each part of the process involves aspects of supporting your messages to improve credibility, integrity, and professionalism as you enter conversation with other experts in the field.

But why research what you already know? This short video gives a simple, clear example.

Each box below provides resources to guide you through developing and supporting your communications.

  • The Process of Writing with Research and APA: Follow a recipe for success as you develop ANY type of communication from start to finish.
  • Critical Thinking: Avoid being manipulated by others, and develop your own logical arguments free of common fallacies.
  • Research and Information Literacy: Know how to learn safely in our conflicted, bias-filled information environment. This includes finding, evaluating, reading, and taking notes on sources.
  • Supporting Arguments: Apply prior knowledge, research, and rhetorical strategies to make credible arguments.
  • Writing with Integrity: Protect your credibility as a student and professional communicator.
  • Citing Sources: Boost your ethos, maintain integrity, and help your readers by citing appropriately following APA Style.
  • Research and Writing Tools: Tap into the latest research, writing, and communication tools.

The Process of Writing with Research and APA

Every argument should be carefully constructed following the writing process, which is detailed on the Writing Process page.

The process of writing with research support is a bit more complicated. This video series explains why we research, how to do it, and how to use researched information and APA in our writing. Be sure to look for other resources on the full writing process, especially those on organizing and outlining your ideas and source information BEFORE drafting!
